Before i sign the contract for my new studio, i need to figure out if i can make it work acoustically.
In this video we'll be checking the rooms Standing waves AKA Room modes and we'll be placing the sweetspot.

I will check all of this with an expert, so make sure to subscribe if you dont wanna miss out on that!

Hello. I am mostly Dutch blood, mixed with Italian and German, Brought up in Venezuela, and now live in North Carolina. Building a 3 room studio in a barn in the middle of nowhere outside of Charlotte NC. I am also at the exact time frame of designing my rooms as you are in this video. I had to subscribe and see where you are. It really hit me how similar the situation is, with the software, the measurements, the questions, the "broke" part not being able to buy new monitors, the questions to the audio pros... ya made me smile! Keep it up. I will enjoy following your process as I follow behind a month or two!

Maybe the front wall made of frame and all filled up like a projection wall with the speakers in it would be best. In my view it's lost room space anyways so more rockwool there will help the room?
If so then question is about the cover, maybe some wood to give the room a nice look and mid-life back combined with gaps that absorb thru clothing into the rockwool.
Decent Hermholtz at the rear tuned to the room or behind some mid range panels to help cancel out a resonance.. I got a big one at 86HZ I could not get away with. The Hermholz fixed it here. You can measure it with a calibrated suggested REW condenser and tune the hermholtz that way if you hit it hard. It's what I did in a small room and I got a good flat curve with just enough reflection. I can almost walk around a vocal as it feels like living in its own room space. Some friends could not believe how precise the room behaves.

this is just a video I was looking for. I am in the middle of a studio, build myself and just got home from Home Depot buying all of the supplies that I needed to build some extra panels. Wanted to make sure the philosophy and understanding was right because I’m also doing this withoutan acoustic expert by my side. Great job with the video using the Amrock calculator. I’ve gotten some insight from this. Can’t wait to see the next video when you talk to them!

I love the way you work out many of the major tasks in room acoustics! Great video!

Hi Thomas, finally somebody explaining room treatment "the easy way". I also did all my room treatments without an acoustic expert and basically the same questions came up. Do I have to follow the 38% rule? How important is the equilateral triangle?... I'm really looking forward to see what the experts will say on your design.
Would it be possible to share your Sketchup project? As I am not an expert in Sketchuop it would be very helpful as a starting point.
Cheers!

I think treating the ceiling will tame more problematic modes, because the distance from the floor to the ceiling is the shortest, and thus the modes will be higher and more problematic.

Can’t wait for another video related. Very detailed and entertaining🎉🎉

10:06 The "38% rule" was actually never meant to be a rule or called that by the inventor) and only applies to very specific "live end/dead end" designs in very large studios.
I‘d completely disregard it for the vast majority of rooms.

15:07 unfortunately it doesn’t haha
You could move those 25cm panels inwards and leave another 25cm airgap behind them to almost get the full 50cm effect, but that would of course defeat the purpose of leaving more space.

Thinner panels absorb high end, but not low end, so they could tilt the frequency balance of the room.
An alternative would be to still have thicker panels, but less of them.
Of course if then there is a spot with a nasty flutter echo, it’s better to half treat it than not treat it at all.

And the 25Hz room mode, you’ll probably have to just completely ignore it.
How accurate do you really need 25Hz to be?
Do you need 25Hz at all?
Might be best to not create/monitor at that frequency in the first place.
A lot of this is trial and error.

I‘m very excited for the follow up video with your room acoustics expert!

You definitely don’t need 3m of rock wool. Density is another variable you didn’t take into account. Varying densities of absorptive materials will get it done with triangle base traps with 1m border lengths, even with an air gap between the panel and the wall. Also, all those low waves will hit any diffusion/absorption material between the source and the walls reducing the wavelengths.

Next to it being super useful, I think you should rather focus on reading your 22k unread emails instead

hey Thomas, great video! Some solid technical info and facts, but also relatable with "thoughts by a normal guy" on a topic that you're not an absolute expert in. Hope I get my point across. All the best for the new place, just looked it up. I really love the street's name, fantastic 🙂 ⚛🧲💡 // Looking forward to Markus chiming in on this, soon. Great guy, one of the best imho.
