Liberal Bible Scholars Are Lying!!! Dr. Joshua Bowen

Many conservative Christians commonly use the term "Liberal Scholars" when telling other Christians who to learn from and how they should study their Bibles. They often consider liberal scholars liars and

Limiting information is a key tactic of a cult.

As someone who watched Kent Hovind's videos religiously and have spoken to him on the phone, that impression was spot on.

The part about "how would you disprove christianity" is utterly dishonest. I'm a Christian but if scholars could prove many if not all of the Bible to be false, I'd be convinced, but they haven't.
I'm sure most other Christians would agree with me on this. If there was no truth, why would we believe it? There is. Plenty of it.

Biblical criticism is one of the most consequential movements in intellectual history. From DF Strauss, to Schweitzer and Crossan, this movement should be hailed for its intellectual bravery and cultural impact.

Dr. Bowen is one of those people who exude 'good people vibes'.

I thoroughly enjoy listening to what he has to teach.

Mythvision introduced me to Dr Josh and Assyrian civilisation early in lockdown - as an Evangelical I only listened because Josh had that similar theological background and because Assyria seemed interesting as a major power cited in scripture and safe as “non-biblical”. I learned they had the original sources of huge numbers of clay tablets, which fill in so much of the Hebrew Bible world from a separate viewpoint.
Josh’s background let me open my eyes and ears a little (plus he’s so obviously fun) … and that provided a fundamental (no pun intended) grounding on which to build on. I literally listened because I didn’t dismiss him as “liberal” - what I’d done with scholars for nearly 30 years. [“if only they’d believe personally in Jesus their blind eyes would suddenly be opened to see the truth, and leave this satanic so-called-academic dead foolishness behind them” …. I’m understanding so much these past 2 years about myself and why I held onto these attitudes, and the fear I had deep down of listening to experts …. By dismissing them out of hand as “liberal” before they utter a word, I was protecting myself with this mental barrier (just as indoctrinated JWs are taught to do via the word “apostate”)!]
Thanks Derek and Dr Josh, a wonderful double act ❤

If beliefs are so fragile that they cant bear examination, then they are not worth having.

Ironically, it's through scholars like Dr. Bowen that help me appreciate the Bible and what it really is.

Liberal scholars,
those that tend to think for themselves,
those that search for facts and truths.

This is a big issue when it comes to Islam because because most Muslims will argue that any non-Muslim scholar cannot know/say anything authoritative about the Quran. Funny thing is that most serious scholars of the Quran and early Islam are not Muslim, since (as Dr. Qadhi said) they do not have read lines to deal with and can do honest academic work (without losing their job, or head!).

I would call Dr. Mike Licona a conservative scholar, not a fundamentalist scholar.

Fundies are constantly attributing motives to those who disagree with them. Whatever THEIR motives are in doing so, it distracts from the real issues. It also smacks of projection—that THEIR reasoning is ‘motivated’ so so must be everyone else’s.

I relate very much to your experience with what conservative Calvinist types say about liberal scholars. What snapped me out of it was reading a liberal scholar’s review from the 1920s of J. Gresham Machin’s book Christianity & Liberalism where he points out that most of these ‘liberal scholars’ he was denouncing as promoting some insidious agenda were actually Christians who were compelled by overwhelming evidence to adjust their beliefs. Of course, conservatives continue to parrot that slander today, partly I suspect because they’re trying to deny that overwhelming evidence against inerrancy and their ‘orthodox’ doctrines.

It doesn’t help that they’ve been empowered by the extremely dubious presuppositional apologetics of hacks like Van Til to delude themselves that they’re right by necessity

Lying might be a strong word, but speculating and then speaking as if they are certain is a problem.

I see both sides not putting the Bible in the proper historical/cultural context. I was taught you need to seek to understand that before you try to interpret anything from the Bible.
