the art critique thing is a great point. one of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from an animation prof who would remind us "you are not your work" because it's easy to take things personally, but he wouldn't critique and call things out if he didn't want us to improve. a good mindset.

The issue with essayists is that the audience takes what they say without any salt and then regurgitate what they saw in the essay as their own opinion, or fact.

Criticism is the highest form of love from a fan. We want the things we enjoy and love to excell and be amazing, which is why we're very critical when an objectively poor product is released.

To blindly love something simply because it belongs to a specific IP or franchise is worse because it tells the creators that people don't care if effort is put in so long as there's key jangling, hence why we seldom get movies, shows, games, etc. of reasonably good quality these days.

The term "hater" is just as overused as every other social media buzzword these days and, like those buzzwords, has lost all meaning.

Kinda ridiculous premise though, when critique is such a tiny segment of all the kinds of video essays there are. Video essays cover not just culture and media, but everything from natural history to music theory, to philosophy to mixology lol
