Pronghorn running down Highway 41 in Montana

Показать описание
I came across this herd of Pronghorn running down Highway 41 in Silver Star, Montana. Initially, I thought these animals were Antelope but I later learned that the technical name is Antilocapra americana. The Pronghorn can sustain a speed of 35 mph for a period of four miles which makes them the fastest land mammal in North America.
In the past, I have encountered large herds of cattle crossing the Montana highways but those are cattle drives complete with cowboys, cattle dogs and they usually have flag vehicles to stop traffic. Under Montana law, I was not required to stop and wait for these Pronghorn to move so kept on driving because I saw an opening off to the right. Yes, they were panicked, but I saw that all animals made it off to the right safely.
My dog Clyde is an Australian Cattle Dog mix. He sits with me in the truck and watches all sorts of wildlife as drive around in Southwestern Montana. When I see a hoofed animal or herd of animals, I always refer to them as deer when I am talking to Clyde.
