A look at the Tektronix 5 Series at the Electronex stand.
This is NOT a review, it's just Dave bumbling around.
Also the sexy new Rohde & Schwarz RTP series scope

I bet that salesman was glad to see the rear of Dave.

Oh, good lord Dave, complaining about the weight of a modern scope? Please. We used to haul a Tectronix 545a beast up and down ladders in submarines back in the day. 70 pounds in one hand to make it up or down the ladder and through the hatches. I would have given my left nut for that 5 series.

R&S digital connector is same as on the RTM - yes, like a wider HDMI. Cables are made by Samtec, so connector probably also Samtec.

Finally, a Tek that has a responsive UI.

That’s a 29 pin “HDMI” connector that was developed for future higher bandwidth HDMI applications. R&S has repurposed it for there logic analyzer probes.

I use the MSO54 every day. 4 channel model. A couple of my friends at the office have the 8ch models. These are LEGIT scopes.
Dave, I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos, and for this I am grateful. But good lord, your nitpicking is unreal.

By the way.... “don’t turn it on, take it apart!”

The Original Battlestar Galactica used Tektronics equipment in the series for all the neat looking electronics on the ship. And i scored two Tektronics 50 ohm 2 watt bnc terminators at good will for 99 cents!

It has some unique properties. In particular, it can decode and trigger(!) on Ethernet, which is a unusual feature.
Six channels allows monitoring of two Ethernet ports and two additional signals.
Wish it had even more advanced or customizable Ethernet frame decoding, and more advanced math/measurements based on the Ethernet trigger time.
But still, it is one of the best scopes for Ethernet measurements at the moment.

I like that blue plastic colour and the button backlights look good and not too dazzling.

Nice that it has a USB 3 port. I wonder if it could do video capture and dump it out to a flash drive. The full HD resolution of the screen opens up a whole host of possibilities.

I'd love to have a scope that's fairly fast with digital logic inputs. At the moment I'm mainly interested in viewing USB and LVDS display signals.

Let him have his gripes. Unlike a lot of the commenters he will actually pony up and drop big money on a good scope that will see regular use.
