Minecraft: The List - Episode 1

Over the past several years I've begun curating a list of things that should be changed, added, or altered within the popular videogame Minecraft. This list is now over 100 items long. I am happy to now share this list with you with a new weekly series: The List! This list is made from the perspective of someone who has played Java Edition Minecraft now for 13 years, the last 10 of which I have spent playing Minecraft as been my full-time job. I also have expert knowledge of many Minecraft systems and playstyles from Redstone to Speedrunning and have had several of my ideas over the years implemented into the game itself. I hope this video will promote healthy discussion within the Minecraft community about balance, intent, and feature depth within Minecraft. With any luck we might see some of these ideas implemented into Minecraft soon.

As a bedrock player I can’t wait until I can hold tools in my off-hand!! It’s such a pain trying to mend tools.

This series might take a minute to build some steam, but I think this is a genius idea for a series. Especially from someone as familiar with playing the game in so many different ways like Cub. Can't wait dude!

6:10 Well the way to replace it is two fold.
- Renewable sand
- Movable tile entities.
Boom, every contraption that uses the tnt dupe, doable, and even more possibilities!

The point about the glow berry glow effect being cool for minigames is actually important! More mechanics that enable new minigame ideas are always a great idea.

On your Nether Roof idea, why not extend the Nether vertically to build height and make the roof the actual roof of bedrock at build height. 

Players would still be able to travel between holes in the roof, but could not build there, making it equivalent to the void in the Overworld.

You could also then change the calculations for cross-dimensional portal height, leading to less overlapping portal problems like we see with the Post System in Hermitcraft.

If you don't already have it on your list. Add shulker boxes being able to be dyed on both the top and bottom. This would help visually sorting items tremendously (redstone box is pure red, firework box is red and white).

One idea that has been boiling inside my head is that allays could have a special interaction with bundles:
Giving an allay a bundle would make the allay try to grab more of the items that are already inside the bundle(so could be different items), and, of course, they would fill the bundle with said items. However, instead of droping the items to the player, they would drop the whole bundle, but only when it's full. The player is still able to take the bundle back at any time of course.
Additionally, when given a bundle, allays could follow the player more consistently, like a tamed wolf.

afaik, removing TNT duping is already something they want to do. i remember a dev said that they wanted to add a form of renewable sand and movable tile entities to java first before removing duping though

Great video Cub! Sidenote: building on the nether roof is a parity issue as well.

We can get up there on Bedrock, but we can't build anything.


It honestly makes me jealous watching Hermit Craft like, ah man, I wish I could do any of this, but no.

At least we get moveable tile entities!

Cub: Remove one of the most widespread and universally abused bugs in the game, TNT duping, breaking hundreds of farm designs and causing inevitable outcry and backlash, all for the greater good of the long term integrity of Minecraft.
Also Cub: Add sugar cubes :3

Cub, I'm so exited for this new series! That being said, I think Mojang should focus on giving player new opportunities, not taking them away. Currently, if you don't want to abuse the nether roof, you don't have to. If you want smooth stone stairs, though, you would need to mod them in (which is not the end of the world, just means that not all players will end up experiencing them). My point is that there is already a solution to the nether roof exploit in vanilla Minecraft -- the player's free will and ability to choose not to abuse it -- while there is not a vanilla solution to the lack of slab and stair variants for certain incomplete block families.

Obviously, exploits like that are overpowered, but if Mojang were to focus on balancing, that (in theory) takes time away from adding new features, and therefore I believe it should be a lower priority.

Another fun thing about sugar cubes could be that if you place them in water, after a few seconds they dissolve. I think some interesting uses could emerge from that.

Here’s one for you Cub. Get rid of the librarian, and replace it with a scribe. The scribe has the same trades as the librarian minus enchanted booked. The scribe will now make copies of existing books for emeralds. This means no more rolling endlessly for the right trade. It also encourages exploring, and rebalancing loot tables could bring new life to old structures (no one needs to go to a jungle temple now, but they would if it was the only place to find say unbreaking).

Adding to the glow berries idea, they could be brewed into potions of glowing for a longer duration. Or maybe even a secondary effect like increasing mob aggro range
