Darktide is one of the few games that managed to do the lasgun justice. It's no bolter, but jokes aside it's definitely no flashlight either.

The only reason people joke about the Lasgun being weak, is because they're bottom of the barrel for the kind of guns in the setting of 40k. (The other guns are THAT crazy.)

But in general, the lasgun is the kind of scifi weapon you would kill to get your hands on.
Easy to manage, easy to reload and can blow off limbs if given the chance.

The Lasgun is the perfect infantry weapon - It's easy to make, easy to train with, it makes logistics far simpler. Just give every guardsman 5 clips and a charging station for each company. More importantly, its a weapon that even the most clueless Guardsman from the most backwards world could learn how to use.

It reminds me of some general's account trying to charge into a wall of pikes on horse back, saying how genuinely terrifying it was. The lasgun isn't strong on it's own, but you never run into just one lasgun.

The whole "flashlight" joke only came around because they were so comparatively weak and limited when the Imperial Guard's main opponents (Orks and Chaos Marines) were taken into account.

Calling it the “Imperiums weapon of choice” is weird when there’s no game at all called “Lazgun.”

I noticed that the games show lazguns with recoil. In reality, there would be no recoil since it’s just light your shooting out. You could keep firing on target and have no recoil to deal with 😊
