In this video, Tom teaches our fellow RC enthusiasts how to use the new Avian Prog menu to program your Avian ESC right from your Spektrum Smart compatible transmitter. Follow along to learn how!

--- New features covered in this video ---
Added: Avian Smart ESC Programming via TexGen
➢ Change and save Avian programmable options directly from your Spektrum DX, iX or NX transmitter and Smart receiver. Enter the Avian Prog. menu on your Spektrum transmitter to review, change and save
programmable options that were once only able to be updated via the SPMXCA200 Smart ESC programmer or by using the SmartLink app. Use the aileron and elevator to navigate the menu and make selections.

Added: “Reverse” Brake Type
➢ To use “Reverse” brake type select the option and then set a channel to activate the reverse thrust (option 15 on all Avian ESCs). When the reverse function is activated using the channel designated the ESC will cause the motor to stop
then spin in the reverse direction and increase with throttle input.

Added: “Governor Gain” (Heli Mode only)
➢ Controls how aggressively the governor maintains the set RPM
o Level 1 (less) to Level 3 (more)

Added: “Auto Restart Time” (Heli Mode only)
➢ Set the auto-rotation bailout timing

Added: “Restart Accel.” (Heli Mode only)
➢ Controls how aggressively RPMs are recovered

Added: “Thrust Reverse Ch.”
➢ ** Requires Brake Type set to “Reverse” ** Select the channel that will control the reversing function

***--- Some important notes ---***
- ALL Spektrum Avian ESCs can use this feature with update. This Includes the 15 amp, 30 amp, 45 amp, 60 amp, 80 amp, 100 amp, and 120HV esc.
- This menu will appear on ALL Gen 2 Spektrum DX transmitter, All iX intelligent Spektrum Transmitters, and all NX transmitters. You may need to perform a firmware update to gain access to the Text Gen menu for Avian Programming.
- For access to this menu you will need to be utilizing a Smart Avian ESC and Smart compatible Receiver.

What would you put a reversing esc in? 🤔🤔🤔

Nice instructional video, thank you. Please add the first step to enter the Smart ESC Programming Screen. I found this part missing from your video and only reading one of your replies realized that when you said go to Telemetry, it was not the Menu item but a full thumb roller to the right before you can see the menu for SMART ESC. Once there my model set up prevented me from completing the steps because the stick movement no longer resulted in +100 / -100 registering to the programmer. So I set up a new model, fresh called "TEST" with no limits or trim setting and I was able to enter the menu and change the ESC successfully using the instructions in this video. Very cool. Initially I tried using the Stick Programming Method and it didn't work properly. I know this because I have used the same method to program 3 other manufacturers ESCs and theirs seem to read my inputs more precisely. Overall this is a nice way to quickly change ESC parameters on the fly, but you still need to set up a fresh model with no presets for trim or rates so that the stick registers -100 at one end and +100 at the other. HOPE THIS HELPS ANY OF YOU STRUGGLING WITH THIS. Scott

First off I added Text Gen in my Telemetry screen (iX12). Then I opened the ESC tab in the Telemetry screen and added some motor info: Poles, cell #. Better success now.

Well I managed to program thrust reversal on a twin motor plane with two 60 amp Avian ESCs. Both ESC were programmed separately with Rx slot 1 and then both were connected to Rx slot 1 with a Y connector with the red wire removed from one Y connecting to one of the ESCs. Cannot rely on the telemetry however, but no matter, I don't need it for that fast plane, just the timer alarm and voice on the aileron, elevator and rudder rate switches.

This video made my programming a piece of cake, thank you

I got a twin timber, updated reciever and since that unlocked it basically i setup the plane in forwsrd programming but now my motors spin backwsrds like its in thrust reverse, idk if that is normal when unlocking the reciever then you have to change it back the right way in textgen

Thanks for the video it's very good. I have been searching for the information on how to get the Ultimate Biplane reverse thrust to work. But the manual is useless. It says reverse thrust is available. I used the roller wheel to look for the menu. But the Avian prog does not come on my NX 10 screen. I guess the 637 stock receiver isn't working with my esc so I can not use this function

I just ordered the new E-Flite D-18 Beechcraft that has a Spektrum Avian dual 40 amp ESC ( SPMXAE0240A ). According to the manual it says you must program the ESC for Thrust Reverse with a Smart ESC Programming Box ( SPMXCA200 ). Your video says you can program any Avian ESC with a newer generation Spektrum radio. I have a new NX8. Can I program the Beechcraft D-18 for thrust reversing from my radio, or must I purchase the Programming Box to do this??, as stated in the manual. Thanks for your answer, I will watch for it.

Hello, thank you very much for this usefull video. But I have one problem: I can open programming menu (with the rigt stick), but it is not possible move between the programming options (e. g. FLIGHT MODE, BRAKE TYPE etc.). The transmitter don't react on my moving up and down with right stick. Could you give me any advice? Thank you very much! 🙂

There are couple of Avian apms available in the market. Now, I have a Smart RC battery 3200mAh 3S 11.1V 30C, and NX6 with an AR6610T. What kind of Avaian do I have to use. Also, do I have to use a telemetry. What kind if I have to.

With the new 80mm F-16's, with full fresh battery charge, programed the esc, at full throttle my motors pulsate and very little power is achieved in flight. What could be the issue. Using my DX-18 and it is updated. Both T-Bird and Viper are brand new. I've tried recalibration twice with same result. Pulse 6s 5000 45c.

How about mode 1 pilots? Any work around for that (besides changing radio to mode 2 to do this)?

Love the video and the new Avian ESC. Is it possible to do this same thing on a DX6 G2 for the "CH7 - dumby channel/internal channel"?
Also where can i find a video on how to set up a Carbon Cub S2 1.3M BNF with my DX6 G2 and have my Flaps working?
Is this possible, i know it was possible on the DXS RTF TX somehow..
Thanks

Hi, the Avian Prog menu is not showing up when I scroll on my DX8e. I just got the new A10 64mm, and it says I should be able to do it.

I do have a 90mm Viper from last year, and I was able to get the Avian Prog menu working for that plane, so I don’t know what the issue could be.

Its great it can be programmed from my (DX9) transmitter, but how do I remove that menu from my flight screen?? I dont want to see that menu while flying and monitoring my telemetry menus.

Can I get reverse thrust with a non spektrum reciever? Such as a radio master tx16s?

Love your videos Tom!

Considering using 2 of the 120Amp Avian ESCs connected to EFlight Power 180 Brushless Outrunners in the Hangar 9 OV-10 with 12S configuration. Plan to use AR20310T receiver. Is this receiver a Smart receiver? Do you recommend an alternative receiver?

Notice that this ESC does not support motor reversing. Is there an upgrade planned to include reversing on this ESC in the near future? If so, would both be assigned to the same switch on my Spektrum iX20?

All of my current planes and jets are BNF or PNP foamies. This will be first ARF. Trying not to wait till last minute to resource all the parts.
