Well, it looks like Nintendo will, once again, be rereleasing an old game at an even higher price than it was when it was brand new.
Donkey Kong Country Returns originally launched back on the Wii for $50. The price was later dropped to $20 when it was sold as part of the Nintendo Selects line of games. Eventually a 3DS version of the game was released for $40, but it came with some new added levels. This 3DS version was also discounted to $20 when it too got the Nintendo Selects treatment.
Now, DKC Returns is getting its 3rd release from Nintendo, and this time, on Switch, it will have its highest retail price ever: $60. This has made a lot of Nintendo fans quite upset, as it seems this version doesn’t really add anything to justify that price increase besides HD textures and graphics.
Now, technically, if you adjust for inflation, the original Wii release would cost you just over $70 today. So you could realistically argue that this new Switch version is technically cheaper than the original. But still, that hasn’t stopped the disappointment from fans.
It seems like $60 is just what Nintendo thinks remastered Wii games should be worth. We saw the exact same price, and the exact same outrage, when Skyward Sword and Kirby’s Return to Dreamland were brought to the switch. Mario Galaxy was also priced at $60, but it was an easier pill to swallow because it came bundled together with 2 other 3D mario games, 64 and Sunshine.
