Making a Cubby Shelf

We needed more storage in Claire's room. We came up with a cubby shelf of nine cubbies in a three by three grid. Each cubby holds an eleven inch fabric box. I found I could build this project with one piece of 4 by 8 plywood. I start by cutting out the pieces for the cabinet carcass. Then I glued and nailed the pieces together starting from the inside working outward. I cut a rabbet for the back, and attached the back, which gives the piece great rigidity. Next I made the top cap. This consists of a frame with a piece of plywood in the center. The function of the top cap is to hide the ends of the plywood sides. Next I made the base. This consists of a frame on four legs. The frame is mitered with biscuit joints. The four legs are turned on the lathe. I attached the base to the carcass with screws. The whole things was sanded and painted. The fabric boxes fit perfect.

Love watching your videos, even if it's just a box of sorts.

Your videos make me smile Frank. That's the greatest compliment I can think of, coming from a person with depression. Keep up the great work!

Superb work Frank, your tutorials are a breath of fresh air, you make it look easy, which is the sign of a true craftsman. Not, a bit of a "bodger"....like myself :).
Take care

Great video, thanks for explaining how to make the furniture, the steps to follow and how to do the details, it cleared up many doubts I had about how to do it, thanks again and regards

I always feel so relaxed watching your videos. I'm dreaming of the day I can spend, like, 10 minutes in the shop. Right now I'm rockin' a 2-year-old and a 2 month old, so it will be some time. I notice you have kids. Does it get better once they're older? I also saw your blog documenting how your 400amp service shop came together and your old shop. Impressive! Loved the photos of the bandsaw on the trailer. It must be an absolute pleasure using those tools after all that planning and work.

I'm speechless. I was just wandering youtube to find a video to get an idea of how to make a display shelf for my husbands figurines and I found this. I knew from the first 2 minutes into the video I wouldn't be able to do anything close to this but the level of skill you have intrigued me and I watched it all the way through. Your passion is simply mesmerizing. Great job!

Frank awesome video. You're the man! Your shop is cleaner than my house. The quality of your video production is excellent. Love the sound effects, especially the squeaky one when you're loosening the clamps. Thanks for this.
