It is very sad that such oppression still is allowed in today's world. my aunt works in mental health and says the women have to sneak to meetings. if they have a family member suffering mental illness.
i like happy endings since life is blah, so i won't read the book.💖

They went in a pretty different direction with Dovid, which I was quite sad about in the film! The book showed much more depth to Dovid in how he navigated his relationship with Esti as well as the new responsibilities he has found himself with, and also in the sense of creating a "safe place" within the community. I thought the book was a bit more optimistic about how the community it is set in could evolve and change, while like you said the movie was very much a romance story between Ronit and Esti and so the ending being focused on Esti as an individual made sense.

I thought Ronit was made to be much more likeable in the film (the whole thing with Scott was non-existent and her career was obviously different from the book). And on Esti and "silence" I thought was a very important thread in the book which didn't come out in the film, for many people in similar communities it's probably familiar, you say only what needs to be said and think hard and well about the outcome before deciding to speak. Esti seemed to be more vocal and assertive in the film (I loveddd Rachel McAdams's performance though), perhaps that is consistent with the romance being more a mutual thing from the get-go in the film.
