Olly, Eustice and the British government have showed time and again the level of disregard at which they hold your country's agricultural industry. To come on national media and lie, and not acknowledge the crisis being faced not only is downright insulting, but also shows the disingenuous attitude the government has towards agricultural and food security for the British people. When the pig factory staffing problem was raised a while back, he shrugged his shoulders and said it will mean less competition for those farmers who don't go to the wall. The trouble is so many people will swallow what he says and the media won't call him out.Ye ate up against it with the anti ag agenda between rewilding, anti animal, fake meat and now this. Many of us across the Irish Sea mightn't be too excited about our minister for agriculture but at least we don't have to put up with that muck. When we are facing food shortages over the next 18 months, it might give people food for thought to think about where their food comes from

Olly, gov. have not cared about us farmers for going on 60-70 years. The supermarkets do the work of feeding the nation. Food will be imported, people will pay whatever, because the base indregients farmer produce is only a very small percentage of a person pay. Even if civil unrest sweaps the country or world, god forbid, George`s policy will do little to help us. It`s interesting to note the Irish gov. have now reconised the shortage of fertiliser will lead to less fodder this winter, and plans are ongoing to deal with the issue. Back in about 2013 there was a fodder short fall on this island, and both gov. payed the haulage from UK and EU of fodder. I was deducted nearly £1000 of the basic payment scheme, last year because my oat crop was the height of a mf 135, the extra tonnage harvested put me over the degration by 0.69kg of p /ha. Even thou I carried forward half the tonnage to the following year. It shows how out of touch civil servants and policy makers are. They`re

You are absolutely correct that the big question facing all farmers is whether they will plant anything in the autumn. At £1, 000 per tonne I can't see it happening. Got to come to a head soon.

Feeling 70%, on a road run today supporting a young boy for cancer treatment in Northern Ireland thinking about diesel. Westminster doesn’t seem to look beyond the M25.

So if we are going to be using all of this freely available FYM and slurry will George be talking to the EA to get them to lift all the restrictions around using it then

Olly, please note that the Northern Ireland farming minister, , Edwin Poots, has asked for 70 million pounds to be diverted to help their farmers re fertilizer costs. That is compared to 250 million for their Basic Payment Scheme budget. ( Im not sure if this is reallocation inside their budget or new money from Westminster.)
Also, if you haven't already please read the official Yara fertilizer website news section for March 1st statement where it states 2020, around 800 million people went hungry to bed, representing an increase of 120 million people from 2019. The war (UKRAINE)threatens to reinforce this development. Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), David Beasley, had the following reaction: “Just when you thought it could not get any worse (….) Now, food, fuel & transport costs will skyrocket. An absolute catastrophe”
Their statement also details their Fertilizer plants only running at less than HALF CAPACITY !!!

Loving your videos, I've just got back into farming after a few years out, solely arable farm in East Yorkshire about 3000 acres. Regarding the fertiliser issue I've always liked the use of cover crops, surely these need to utilised more for better soil health and fertility.

It's astonishing the level of nonsense that Eustice spouts. What can we all do, do we pressure the NFU to lobby them on the seriousness of the subject, do we write to our MP's? We will plant in September, at the moment, but it's gonna be very tight.

We have no livestock, we came out of Broiler chickens because we couldn't make it pay well enough to justify the financial outlay for a crop. We couldn't spread the muck we made because we were in an NVZ so we gained no benefit from that. We are also within a no spread radius of a water treatment plant so we can't spread sludge. Kinda feel like we are screwed if we can't afford/source any N for our crops.

Great rant Olly, it really is serious, especially when we are currently banned from spreading N rich manures this autumn!

On that thing the guy said.. It's said there is a Manure surplus in the Netherlands (at the eind of august every farmer has his storage empty, so is there a really a surplus?) and there goes (mainly) concentrated pig manure off for export, mostly to France and Germany. But with European fostfate and nitrogen rules we are forced to use fertilizer from the factory, EVEN when a farmer has manure/slurry enough. He/she is not allowed more than X kgs of fosfates and nitrogen out of animal manure on his land, but is allowed to spread artificial fertilizer. Never understood that. But export/import is only interesting if it's not too far away. Our strawsupplier hauls manure to the Reims (Fr) area and brings back straw to the Netherlands.

For our farm it is kind of a good thing, as we have horses and horsemanure has always fresh straw in it (and with 5/600ton a year we don't have the capacity to store and composte it), so it gets hauled to the mushroombarns. So we have space to haul in cow or pig manure, which we get payed for. But still have to spread some fertilizer on top of that.

Long story short, even with more/loads of muck laying around, you probably still need artificial fertilizer, because of rules no one who works in the field understands..

I'm not a farmer but I wake up early enough to listen to Farming Today on R4. The minister is frequently on with vague promises and is shameless when the presenter corrects him. The fishermen have been told so many tales made up by people in London who are out of touch with reality. I get the impression that they think we have short memories and they will get a shock when a journalist collects all the lies and false promises and they are then widely publicised.
