In 1985 this show became a MASSIVE hit, no one had ever seen older women portrayed like this before. They were sexually active, they were always talking about sex, they would insult each other quite savagely, and the show dealt with topics that were groundbreaking.
What really made the show such a big hit was that it appealed to all ages. I was in high school in 1985-1990 and most of the kids watched it, and quoted from it.

This show is like, unnaturally good for a sitcom, and it is because all 4 of the main actresses are comedic geniuses. I'm in my 30s now, but i watched reruns of this show back when i was 9 in Jamaica, and Sophia was ALWAYS my favourite. They truly don't make stuff like this anymore
