“Madvillainy” - Madvillain (aka Madlib & MF DOOM)
EXPECTATIONS
I definitely had a bias going into this one. It's actually impossible to avoid praise for this album online when it comes to hip hop heads. I listened to "MM...FOOD" last summer and loved it.
SKITS
There are definitely more tracks here that could be considered SKITS under my ranking criteria. The multiple beat cuts here that I'd normally not give a number ranking to, I found were just as important as the songs with rapping over them. Madlib is one half of Madvillain for a reason and it shows through every single beat.
FAVOURITES
It was way too hard to pick a favourite here so I I chose two. "All Caps" is definitely a popular pick, but for good reason. "Raid" in my opinion has the most ear-catching beat on the entire record.
REVIEW
I cannot recommend this album enough. With every listen there is something new to admire that you didn't notice before. It's crazy how ahead of the curve both DOOM and Madlib were all the way back in 2004. "Madvillainy" deserves every ounce of praise it gets daily and I regret not buying the vinyl when I saw it in store.
