Imo, the problem is that people don't understand that the strategy they choose needs to match their goal. For example, my motivation for learning a language is how it sounds, so when I start a new language, the first thing I do is learn the sounds, then I use comprehensible input and only months later I talk to someone. For someone who doesn't care too much about pronunciation and wants to speak as soon as possible to travel or whatever, this strategy wouldn't work. It's not that this strategy, like the others, is good or bad, but it could be worse or better depending or what you're looking for.
