Germany's low coronavirus death rate

Like a number of European countries, Germany has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. There's more than 72,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, but fewer than 800 people have died. That's far less than the thousands who have died in Italy and Spain. CBS News journalist Anna Noryskiewicz joins CBSN with more on what could be contributing to Germany's low mortality rate.

Hello, I am a doctor and I work on an ICU in Germany 🇩🇪. I just want to add a few things. Thank you for this report!
I must say that I am very grateful and I feel very lucky to live and work in Germany during this crisis. Some aspects were not mentioned here: one of the worlds best virologists for Corona, Christian Drosten, is German. He discovered the first Corona virus 🦠 during the SARS 😷 pandemic in 2003, he is completely specialized on corona epidemics since then and developed the test kits. He saw what was happening in China and immediately informed health care officials back in January. They started distributing the test kits all over Germany already in January, so the labs had plenty of time to get prepared. In our hospital, we had meetings since the beginning of February to discuss how we can handle the situation. We started to cancel many operations (right now, we only do cancer surgery and emergency operations, to save drugs etc.) and trained nurses and doctors to work on ICU. That all seems to pay off now.
We are very, very, very strict at our hospital to separate corona patients from other patients. The corona wards are completely closed, nobody can just walk in there. And inside the wards, we have also very strict rules to follow. It’s exhausting to work there, we are not allowed to drink or eat or take off our masks. But on the other side, none of us who work there have caught the virus yet. I know this is also a bit of luck, but still, many problems can be prevented.
This comment section is hilarious, I laugh about all the jokes that Germans are effective and organized etc., but it’s quite true.. . 😂 And the good thing is that we don’t need to have a complete lockdown. It feels so good to be able to go outside, spend some time in the park, go grocery shopping as normal, without having police controls or anything.
Makes me sick to the stomach to see all these dreadful videos and pictures from other countries 😫😭
Stay safe everyone!! 🍀🍀🍀

In Germany we say: Man soll den Tag nicht vor dem Abend loben.

Girl, it‘s 500, 000 tests a week. They are working to get 300, 000 per day. And Germans follow rules and are clean. Germany provided thousands of tests for Italy before we knew we needed them.

1. Smarter people we actually inform ourselves about what is going on in the world not just our own country. 2. Merkel did not put Economy first she put the people’s health first so she did not deny the virus nor did it take her 5 weeks to tell her population how serious this virus is. 3. Merkel gave us clear rules about staying home so thats what we are doing. 4. And maybe the biggest one: Great and free medical health care, free insurance, a lot of testing without any cost and especially : common sense

Germany did not only produce Machine Guns like in war movies ... it built up a welfare state!
As the US should, too.
Vote for Bernie Sanders!

Having lived in Germany, I appreciate the way Germans respect Authorities. They are also used to staying at home when one is ill. Of course their medical care is way better.

Lets now put more money into our health system instead of our bloated, biggest in the world war budget.

We are better prepared than many countries, but we're by no means well-prepared... Bleibt daheim, bleibt gesund!

Wish I had made it to Germany when I had a chance. Here in my country (USA) it’s getting crazier everyday and half the country doesn’t even think it’s a big deal. I should be where my ancestors came from :(
