I don't know what the sheriff is talking about. I'm a 25 year veteran in a southern urban department and I'm going into the retirement system this year. If I could I'd leave tomorrow. I started my career at 21 so I wasn't old enough until this year.

I don't know about rural or suburban departments, but urban departments it's the lack of support, media attacks, blatant disrespect from certain folks, and being thrown under the bus by politicians. My city has a no pursuit policy for everything outside of a known felony being committed. Dude sped around me, cut through traffic, and pointed his middle finger as he ran a red light. That was last week and that committed me to start the retirement process this year.

Never trust a boss or somebody in command that does not hold their head up high. You are setting yourself up for failure under their command or authority or supervision. You can even hear his nephew tell him to look up. This man’s jobs on the line and so is his department budget, Nobody wants to work for a broken man.

Inadequate health insurance
Defund law enforcement
Being ostracized by prosecuters, District Attorneys, politicians!

I can tell from the interview this dept. has more issues than they stated. The sheriff is constantly looking down, his nephew is “command staff” and “can’t” do overtime. Based on my experience in the departments I’ve worked for, you have a problem with leadership. Are there other contributing factors? Absolutely, I’m sure, but poor leadership will exacerbate all those issues. My current department has a similar issue, but with better leadership you won’t have so many leave.

Command staff not allowed overtime? Normally that’s true, but in extreme circumstances it can be done. The sheriff’s nephew just doesn’t want to do it. Hopefully the officers that stayed take advantage of this and get some changes implemented to better the dept. and their working conditions.
