Examining the Ports of Marvel vs Capcom 2

What do you get when you combine a massive character roster, memorable lounge music, and gameplay inspired by an ADHD riddled crack head having a manic episode? That's right - Marvel vs Capcom 2!

There have been many ports of this game released over the years for various systems, and to celebrate the newly-released Marvel vs Capcom Collection, I wanted to play all of these ports and see what makes them good (or bad)!

MUSIC:
Hiten - Tekken 5
Shotguns - Hajime no Ippo: Victorious Boxers
Yuri Theme - The King of Fighters XI
Dawn - The House of the Dead 2
Shiny World - OutRun2
Soft Collision - Mighty Switch Force 2
Race Menu - Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec

The PS2 and Xbox versions of MVC2 were developed in a very short period of time because Capcom's contract with Marvel was expiring, it led to those ports being rushed (with Xbox Live support for the Xbox port being cut despite the fact that it was advertised in magazines) and were sold in limited quantities, leading to them being rare and expensive to buy on second hand market.

Something to note about the PS2/Xbox versions is the updated Marvel logo in the title screen. It's different than the Arcade/DC title screen. In my opinion, it clashes with the original logo as a stylized fighter, and more like a Branded Product, which is where Marvel games were headed at the time.

Maximilian basically debunked this "balancing" myth. Most changes are more the result of the porting process and not so much the result of the devs attempting to "balance the game". Every glitch change in the ps3/360 port are literally confirmed by the devs (to max) that the glitches just disappeared upon porting the code. They did zero touches to the gameplay

3:26 The Dreamcast version plays a little quicker than the arcade version, but other than that, it has no balance changes or glitch fixes from the arcade version.

In the music department, you'll notice the arcade version has some music tracks that sound differently from all the other versions. The Character Select screen, both Ranking themes, Continue music, Game Over fanfare, and some stages like the Clock Tower get affected.

To this day, I still wonder how online play on Dreamcast worked.

Thank you, No one has made a full on video on this subject, as mostly people say certain things and I don't see it, but I can hear it

Theres definitely slowdown on the PS2 when there's too much going on onscreen and not just slowdown, but some insane screen tearing that makes the game looks even worse than it already does with its lack of anti-aliasing.
The reason for the game's low quality audio and heavy compression is due to Capcom deciding to press the game on a standard Compact disc as opposed to DVD-Rom.
And yes, while the Dreamcast version does run at 480i by default, it also natively supports a 31Khz hi-res progressive scan image (just like its NAOMI counterpart) with the use of a Dreamcast VGA Cable, and it looks absolutely stunning with the right display screen.

Never fail to impress me, Khan ❤ I had to go back and watch all your mvc2 guides now that I can FINALLY play MVC2 for the first time! Venom, Spidey and Storm is my mains! Idk who I'll pick up next but can't wait to see what the future holds for me

Respect for disclosing some versions shown were emulation, I hate when YouTubers make a video saying “game on so and so console”, only to realize halfway through it’s on emulator but they didn’t say it

Also had no clue the Japanese version of Dreamcast port had to get both online and Arcade points, which is a cool Japanese only feature (they always got the coolest stuff we didn’t as Americans), the arcades over there were still very big.

I traveled and lived in Japan summer of 2003 as a high school foreign exchange student and the Tokyo arcades were still always packed with people due to fighting games and their culture.

Hello Kitty was also starting to get big too lol. But yeah I wish we had the VMU Arcade point thing if there was a backup way to get points at home and trade them in for like Arcade points at a lower rate

Thanks for putting the music in the bio, I would have been stuck trying to remember where that Outrun2 track was from for hours if not for that

Finally a video that shows the difference between the versions. The Xbox one was the first console version that I played and had no idea it was considered "the worst" couldn't find much videos detailing why.

2:45 this is mainly why JP mvc2 is cheaper than US mvc2. Unless you know how to hack your vmu, there's no way to unlock all characters. If you unlock characters with d points (btw, you can sit in training mode to max out those points), the game will only give you that option for half of the cast. The other half will need those other points to unlock. Great video.

Still an incredible game no matter what system you play it on. But I recommend the recent collection because it's on all modern consoles (Xbox version comes out 2025), you get the previous Capcom-developed Marvel fighters and crossovers and The Punisher as a bonus. Also because it's convenient and more affordable ($50 is a steal when compared trying to get Sega Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1/2 and Original Xbox copies) as well as being crystal clear HD.

Something that you didn’t mention that I find interesting is the in early advertisements the Xbox version was said to have online support (according to Justin Wong) but it’s not present in the final game

Well done with this video. In addition, the PS2 / Xbox versions are the only ones with transparency problems with some textures (option menu mostly)

Man, that Dreamcast version? /chefkiss
It's perfect. Like, Homelander meme perfect. I got it when I was in the Navy and we played it all deployment. So many great memories, between this and Spawn: The Demon's Hand, which had an... interesting multiplayer mode.

Great video. Thanks for all the memories.
