The extension was the problem in this example. Yes I would always recommend using an impact socket, but the chrome socket was not the reason it didn’t remove the bolt.

We never sold chromed tools in the tool shop i worked at. When i asked my boss why, he replied “Too slippery in your hands, too slippery on the nuts!” 😅

This is common sense to people who work on vehicles but not a lot of people don’t so it’s always good to know a bit about everything no matter what

inertia is the key the impact imparts inertia to the socket and light sockets don't carry the inertia same issue with extensions.

Can you please explain the difference between the chrome socket and impact socket..
I understand the built quality and torque ratings might be the difference but besides that what else would make an impact socket better option.

A heavy duty impact socket. Regardless of the extension. Its the weight of the impact sockets that actually does all the wrk. Thicker is better. (Thats what she said)

The extension makes you lose alot of torque also

So basically the tip is to use the correct tool.

Kinda right but you need an extension for some areas but great tip on the impact socket

The extension is trash and most likey the socket is too. And not to mention the impact is trash too.

I refuse to believe a clean, non rusted, only blue thread locked bolt could not come out with a long handle ratchet and some strength.

Btw, those bolts love love love to snap from ugga duggas, even brand knew. A mechanic know this. Usually it’s the project stopping bolt- the one with the worst access, least visibility, and then requires way more disassembling of the car to work on it.

-This mechanic definitely knows

I feel after all this time if I was using a DeWalt 3/8 electric impact on a car, it would have the same feel as if I took my estwing roofing Hammer and use that to knock a ball joint free

Was there too much slop between the joints? If I remember right one of the primary differences is an impact driver uses a pin instead of a locking ball bearings. DIY fix anything type guy here and I understand the practical use but I'm trying to figure out the science behind it

The extension takes away torque hence the reason the bolt wouldn’t come out, I have HEARD there’s just a slight difference between chrome and black sockets something to do with density or something crazy like that but I’ve never had a scenario where one worked better than the other.

90% of people dont know to use impact sockets with impact guns and dont use extensions if you dont have to...?
Obviously 90% of people dont know that because 90% of people arent mechanics. 100% of the remaining 10% of people who are mechanics though, absolutely DID know this.

Facts. Except it’s an impact wrench, guns shoot stuff

pretty sure extensions DON'T reduce torque. go look it up. all these confident "knowledgeable" people in the comments lol just throw in some words like inertia and nobody will question you.

If you hold the extension and turn it slightly in the direction your going it will keep it from bouncing around and will give you just that little bit it needs to remove it due to the torque loss of the extension.

Same thing would have happened with the regular socket if you had taken the extension out.

I’d imagine almost every chrome socket set specifically says not to use with an impact gun for risk of severe injury. This video should be about that, given the litigious nature of people these days
