Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter, high-society dropouts, and reclusive cousins of Jackie Onassis. The two manage to thrive together amid the decay and disorder of their East Hampton, New York, mansion, making for an eerily ramshackle echo of the American Camelot. An impossibly intimate portrait, this cult 1976 documentary by Albert and David Maysles, co-directed by Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer established Little Edie as a fashion icon and philosopher queen.

I came here after first hearing about Little Edie from Jinkx Monsoon’s impersonation of her on Drag Race and I am pleasantly shocked at how accurate Jinkx’s portrayal of Little Edie actually was. Jinkx nailed the accent, the mannerisms and the strange quirky things she would say that make her so funny to watch! Amazing.

I watched this last night on Prime, incredible! I even dreamed about these 2 women. They definitely leave an impression on ones mind.

They are hilarious!
I couldn’t help but laugh at this bizarre story of two high society ladies who were both eccentric and highly intelligent fire brands! They were brutally honest with each other and I could relate to the blame games they played on each other as too why they ended up with each other instead of husbands.

The older ladies husband passed away leaving her alone and the younger I don’t know if she ever married or not. Edie is a very funny and charming character! I found this documentary fascinating, humorous and at the same time poignant and sad.
Edie says she had many Suitors and her mother counters by saying they weren’t interested in tying the knot with her! And back and forth it goes! Then Edie sings and says she used to sing in public and had a career but then her mother says she couldn’t sing well enough! 😮😅Back and Forth!
Their only visitor was the grounds keeper bringing them food and checking on them every week or so. The house needed repairs from neglect.

Excellent documentary although I felt like I was eavesdropping. 😮😊

Poor Edie gave her life to her mother so she could stay at Grey gardens. I can not imagine the smell in there at the time little Edie seemed like such a sweet soul

I thought I might just try watching and never heard of this movie. I didn't stop! We of course only see part of their lives... but I wonder if they ever went to a doctor? I wonder if they had to take meds for like high blood pressure, fluid retention, gout, depression. It's amazing as it seems they didn't take any prescription drugs. They eat ice cream like it was nothing! It also seems neither of them smoked, which probably added a lot to their health. They both had a sense of humor and didn't hide emotions, which that adds to good health too. What made Edith 2 lose all of her hair? She can be hilarious, Edith 1 too! They were both sedentary... well except Edith 2 when she'd dance with all her youthful energy. Jackie O. was married to one of the wealthiest men in the world and thought she'd help a lot more than she did. Even though Jackie gave $24, 000 they still had huge holes in the walls and seemed in the attic major problems as it was so easy for the raccoons to get in to feed on the mound of white bread and cat food. I thought it was funny, or even kind of sad, when that elderly man and the younger lady, maybe a cousin to Edith 2, came for the birthday party for Edith 1. The whole time is seemed she didn't utter a word or even smile, at the cake, then left silently too...

But it seems like they had good times together! That's what's important!
