The Nobel Prize in Physics 2020 was divided, one half awarded to Roger Penrose "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity", the other half jointly to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez "for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy."

The announcement was made at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

I had the priviledge of working with some of Penrose's co-authors who published numerous papers with Penrose (and Hawking) on blackholes. Their teaching skills were amazing. Penrose came to our university to give 1 or 2 talks a year (mostly on topics of cosmological inflation). I hope he'll continue that after the Nobel Prize and after COVID, but I'n pretty sure his personality is such that the Nobel Prize won't change him at all. He's really down-to-earth. He is a really nice and humble guy who genuinely cares for his grad students, unlike some other Nobel Laureates I've met. I won't mention names, but one of their 1st names starts with an S, and his last name ends with "Weinberg". Anyways, there's no one as deserving of the prize as Penrose, and I hope he makes the best of it, and uses his newly acquired platform to inform the public about the realities of coronavirus.

That little presentation on black holes and the history behind the research was awesome!

I respect the people of the Nobel Foundation who hold the award ceremony as usual under the circumstances of COVID-19.

When I was a kid, which really wasn't THAT long ago, we didn't even know if black holes *actually existed* or if they were mere mathematical constructs, now we have a picture of one, have seen the way the supermassive one in our own galaxy flings stars around it like playthings, and can actually listen to the echoes of their formation halfway across the universe "as" they happen. It's astounding how much has happened in just a few decades.

I am proud and happy for all the fellow humans who can partake in this celebration of science with us in Sweden. It is not titles that honour men, but men who honour titles. This prize would be nothing without you, the people celebrating it, and the brilliant minds inspired by it and acting as lighthouses in the dark.

Congrats to all three Physics laureates this year!
Introducing the fourth woman in history to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, Dr. Ghez 😁👏
I'm also pretty thrilled Dr. Penrose has finally won the Nobel; didn't expect his name to come up this year😄

This is so inspiring! I hope people remember the efforts of Dr Amal Kumar Raychaudhuri whose equations were indispensable in proving Penrose and Hawking's theorems. This is also an occasion to remember the late Stephen Hawking, who probably needs no introduction.

I'm so grateful that humans have gone that far we are slowly understanding the universe perhaps the next generation will have the chance to explore it fully

The fact that singularities are inevitable in GR was first pointed out by Bengali physicist Dr. Amal Kumar Roychaudhuri (অমল কুমার রায়চৌধুরী). His Roychaudhuri equations, also known as AKR equations are key to the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorem. But like another seminal Bengali physicist, Dr. Satyen Bose, he is largely forgotten and isn't mentioned here at all.

Sir Roger Penrose,
Sir Reinhard Genzel,
Madam Andrea Ghez,

For Winning the Nobel Prize in Physics 2020.

It's Passion, Curiosity and The Will to go to Any Lengths to Understand Physics, that Motivates and Pushes us Forward to Understand our True Reality and the Fundamental Laws of Nature.

Thanks for Being an Inspiration to All the Physics Pursuers (Lovers) around the World in our Journey of Understanding the Workings of the Universe.
