Tesla is finally making good on another Battery day promise which involved them refining their own battery grade Lithium for their in-house made batteries using a much more environmentally friendly and less costly process. In this video I discuss Tesla’s recent update for their lithium refinery outside of Corpus Christie Texas and explain their innovative extraction process.

Can’t wait for this to start producing lithium! Great video!

4:10 -- Lithium Refining: the roasting process converts spodumene from the alpha into the beta form (and not the other way around, as suggested in the list).

The output from this plant will be sent to GT where it will be further refined for use in the cathode material. No other OEM is even close to this type of vertical integration.

This sounds good and best of luck to Tesla.

Most Legacy operations and industries spend next to nothing on R&D. The simple fact that Tesla comes in with R&D on the forefront puts them way ahead of traditional companies in this area. The ability to understand chemical reactions across the entire periodic table is far more profound now than just 10 years ago. Changing temperature and pressure, even light exposure was not deeply understood that many years ago. Tesla more than likely will advance the technology many years forward.

I take a shot every time he says “with that being said”.

EnergyX is building a lithium mine in Arkansas that is set to initially produce 25, 000 tons per year. There processing plant extracts lithium from a salt brine pumped from the ground achieving a 90 % extraction rate. The brine is then pumped back into the ground. The extraction only requires water to remove the lithium. This process has minimal environmental impact. The amount of lithium reserves in Arkansas is over a billion tons of lithium.

pretty great video. Really liked the Patent Application statistics and graphs. As long as Elon doesn't create a political backlash this refinery should have a great profit future for Tesla. Tesla would be wise to research how Walmart got run out of Robstown though.

John really appreciate your reports. However maybe we should not expect Tesla to be immediately successful on this refining build. It took the Chinese 20 years and much effort to sort out the process and reduce costs by utilising the waste products. We have to be mindful that a majorly of successful companies like Ganfeng employs 20, 000 engineers and 600 of those have Ph’Ds. The Chinese have developed an entire ecosystem to process and market the refining wastes into detergents and inputs into concrete generation. I think we should cut Tesla some slack here as it may not work or be as cost reductive as they image.
But on a positive note no other USA companies are doing it. Sure we get all this crap about 12 Giga battery factories but you have to have the inputs. Lithium hydroxide, graphite being prime. Cheers.

That still a million cybercabs worth of lithium !

Will solid state or sodium based batteries use lithium? What does future research show and do you anticipate that lithium will continue to play a part? Thanks

With clay based spodemene or can it also be used with DLE as well?

Does anyone know what temperature the kiln burns at in the calcining zone?
