If you want to prevent creepers from blowing up your base, place down some tnt and blow it up yourself.

Now I understand how the "wonky hitbox" method works: because the hitbox occupies the middle of the block while leaving a gap between them that's wide enough for us to walk through and the mobs try to walk over the middle of as many blocks in their way as possible (because the AI computing for that is easier) they don't try to walk along a block's border, although they would fit through.
