My Grandmother Adele Marchesi Coniglio (1875 - 1949) played Mimi, in ”La Bohéme” in Buenos Aires in 1897 and in1898 she visited the Amazon towns of Belém and Manaus where she performed in the “Teatro Amazonas”, She performed in Odessa, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Montevideo, Buenas Aires, Havana, and cities in Turkey and Greece.
In Italy she toured the most important Opera houses in Genoa, Ancona,
Monza, Trieste, Verona, Naples and Bologna.

This film was made the year I was born. Twenty-five years later, I was blessed to see Mirella Freni sing this onstage at the Met, as luminous as ever. Still my favorite Mimi.

So many feelings, such sensitivity and emotion just by watching a man and a woman getting acquainted in a terrace! It is insane! Only art could ever do that!

Puccini's music conducted by Von Karajan, sung by very competent and sensitive singers, with drama and sets created by the master film director Zeffirelli. I am confident in saying that there will never again be such engaging performance of this opera. One breathes and swoons with the music in a way that modern, impotent productions can never inspire.

I've seen La Boheme before, but this version has moved me to tears. Such fabulous singing, touching and emotional. Puccini was simply the master of melody.

When Puccini completed La Bohème in his study at midnight on 10 December 1895, three years after he had begun it, he burst into tears, so great was his own emotion. Sentimental though it may seem, it was the death of Mimi that did it to him. The man who has often been accused of 'manipulating' his audience clearly found it easy to manipulate his own emotions, to the extent that, on finishing Bohème, he admitted that he 'had to get up and, standing in the middle of the study, alone in the silence of the night, I began to weep like a child. It was as though I had seen my own child die.'"

Niente da fare, a distanza di quasi sessant'anni resta la Bohème più bella di sempre ❤

Because every aspect of this production is excellent, I have chosen it t for my "Introduction to Opera" class at a senior center. The goal is to educate the members about opera and to inspire a love for opera. Zeffirelli productions always offer plenty of opportunity and example for learning. I'm looking forward to seeing the reactions to the opera!
