How to Use the Terminal - ifconfig

In this video we breakdown the basics of the ifconfig command in our terminal. We can use this command to view network interfaces and make configurations to them.

I would like to point out what I believe is an error in the video, the broadcast address that I got from the terminal ifconfig en0 was not the address of my router i checked and it did not take me to the admin page for my bt router. I also checked in system prefences network and the ip for my default gateway was ended in 254 not the broadcast of .255

When I run the ifconfig command, it shows the network mask in hexadecimal numbering. Could the netmask be shown in decimal or cider form?

The IP address you’re getting from Google is the external IP address for your gateway, which you should not be putting in a public video by the way. The IP address in the terminal is your network adapter’s IP address, which is generally fine to broadcast, but at this point we now know your public IP, so you should probably take the video down and remind yourself not to do it again. (I’m aware the video is 5 years old and the IP address has likely changed at this point)
