RIP Burt, thank you for the wonderful song. This has such a bittersweet sound to it. Which I think was the point of using it here. Thank you to Mike Meyers and Jay Roach for fighting to put this song and it’s brilliant creator in it. I think these scenes are some of the most iconic montages. We will miss you Burt!

I think this scene absolutely sets this movie apart from others parodies and comedies of the time.

Austin, alone, quietly adapting to the modern world and feeling out of time, all set to Burt's WTWNN. It's so upsetting and lonely and human.
0:14 Just five seconds of driving, feeling the wind on his face. The initial glamor of the modern era now worn off. This is the first time we've seen Austin behaving... normally? Being internal for once.
0:25 His reaction to getting made fun of is heartbreaking. For how loud and obnoxious and self-confident Austin is, he seems... embarrassed. The camera pushes in as he's realizing that he's just not with his people anymore. He's not cool.
0:31 His lifestyle ended up with everyone he knew dying young and tragically.
1:16 His understated bewildered reaction to everything he's missed. Like, yeah! Imagine catching up on thirty years of history. All the unbelievable innovation, barriers broken, everything you cared about unfolding... ... ...and you missed it. The ultimate FOMO. How do you reconcile that?

I grew up with this silly comedy and love looking at why it works.

Thank you for posting this my friend. I’ve always found this scene of the movie to be beautiful and a little melancholy

That moment at 0.25 is genuinely sad. In fact, the scene as a whole, brings some surprisingly tender poignancy to an otherwise lighthearted comedy. I think anyone can relate to that eventually in their lives at some point. To still feel young at heart, but having the things you once thought cool and hip as suddenly being considered outdated. To feel lost in a time when everything is moving on, wishing things were as they were, when you were young and hopeful, with hopes and dreams.

It's a melancholy love letter to a more hopeful time, the swinging 60s, when a whole generation felt they were capable of achieving anything. Burt's song, with its simple but powerful message about love, and Austin's simple peace gesture being mocked, reinforces the sense that the innocent dreams of the 60s counterculture have lost their way.

All I can say is that Austin will be eternally cool, both in the 60s and in any era, those two douchebags sat down mocking him couldn't even be cool in 1997 😂

Love this scene. It truly shows the glamour of Vegas in the 90’s. So much has changed, it is wonderful to have this time documented of Las Vegas.

There was always a different vibe to this scene and when I had seen the movie when I was real young [I was about seven of eight!] I was so sad and felt Austin was so depressed in this scene lmao. Idk, just always hit hard. He truly did miss out on 30 or so years! Forever love, love, l o v e these films💛💛💛

This is still oddly one of the most romantic scenes. Something bitter sweet.
