Still DONE with Patek Philippe Watches

This video is a followup to a video that I released nearly a year ago talking about Patek Philippe watches. With the recent "rumors" of the Cubitus, this is a more length conversation about where Patek Philippe fits in within the watch collecting community, what it means for collectors, and more.

Patek is a mess right now. They are still trying to appeal to hype buyers, not enthousiasts

Wow, 6 days later and after the Patek president's interview and you called the attitude right on the head. For anyone watching this down the line or years later the president made a comment that absolutely mirrored this YouTubers perception of the company. Brilliant. He basically said if you don't like this new watch it's because you can't afford it.

Patek are so lazy for most of their watches. This Cubitus is just another 330 movement in the town and date and a modified 240 in the platinum. They didn’t even bother making a new line of movements for the cases.
Having bought a Lange 7 month ago. I have completely lost respect for Patek and will probably sell my Aquanaut (got it 6 years ago) just to get another Lange. I just don’t love it anymore.

If you buy a high-end watch and then don't wear it because it is "too special" or you are afraid it might get a ding, you bought a watch that is too expensive for you. This is the same as buying a luxury car and then not driving it because you don't want to put too many miles on it. It is just posturing.

Patek in the last few years has only been trying to sell hype. “It’s a Nautilus…but with a Tiffany blue dial!” “It’s a Nautilus…but with a green dial!” “It’s a Nautilus…but with a square dial!“ Give me a break. And Patek buyers are now basically Rolex buyers but with higher budgets. They were told by Instagram and tier list videos to buy a certain watch, and so they go and buy it. No particular discernable interest in watches beyond that.

Such is the Instagram slow-motion wrist-turning trend that the grey market has exploded, and the number of flippers as well. This means a normal customer wanting to explore the brand in store now so often gets treated almost like a persona non grata. You don’t see this happening at JLC, Chopard, Breguet, Piaget, Cartier etc.

None of this paints a very elegant image for a brand that is, for some reason, also trying at the same time to position itself as a low-key, patrimonial house for high horology enthusiasts. You can’t have it both ways.

The muppet boiler room secondary grey luxury watch market is dead

I'll never own a Patek, so its easy to dismiss it as a brand. Vacheron overseas is as well made and rare, and more attainable. I agree dress watches seem less relevant, kinda why Rolex tool watches which offer status, but fundamentally are robust simple movements, more suited to a t-shirt n jeans.

I feel like everyone forgot about all the complications and gran complications Patek has put out in the last couple of years and get stuck on the "hype" watches and now accuse them of becoming a "hype" brand. I don't see it this way at all. The bottom line, Patek is a business and they need to make watches for the demand of the market but I see Patek as being true to who they are when you look at their releases overall in the last few years. Sure, there are other amazing brands such as A. Lange & Sohne or other independent brands who make just as high quality watches. But Patek is like Ferrari, there is McLaren and Lamborghini and even Porsche but Ferrari stands above all because it is Ferrari. There may be cars from other companies that are comparatively better but the prancing horse still stands above all. Same goes for Patek Philippe IMHO. And I am a Patek "collector" and no, in don't like the Cubitus, I don't even love the Aquanaut but I do really like the Nautilus and of course the more complicated pieces.

Patek has lost its grace as a gentlemen watch, it’s now a hype brand same as Rolex and AP. What a shame

Honestly, if a brand has to bank on exclusivity to be the best... it's as far removed from the best as possible.

Patek, RM and Rolex are 3 brands I would not want no matter how much disposable income I had available. They represent arrogance and hype I want no part of. Give me a VC, JLC, Zenith or high end independent. The masses don't know what they are, but I do and could completely enjoy them knowing what I have.

When I was in the military I came back from overseas duty with a bad case of cubitus

I respect Patek as a very high quality, luxury watch. I prefer Vacheron. I own a Rolex, Blancpain, Omega and Seiko.

Cubitus line just reinforces the notion that Patek has intentionally or unwillingly lost their identity as a classically elegant and timeless brand and towards an aimless avante garde one.

Another key consideration: If you work with (or run in) Millennial and Gen Z new tech money circles…You might go 2 full days before seeing someone who isn’t wearing a ‘smart watch.’

Many Silicon Valley-types can easily afford a highly-complicated PP, but aren’t bold enough to tell everyone at the office they spent their 250K bonus on a watch. Now a zero-emissions 🍃 Porsche…Oh, that’s just fine 👌🏼 😂

It's strange because ALL I care about is pedigree with watch brands. If there is no history, I can't connect with a watch. No matter how nice I think a watch is from a design standpoint. I need legacy.

Watch collecting is personal. No right or wrong on any specific brand. If one wants it, it’s the correct watch for that person v
