I think one of the arguments for Tariffs is that when we import the steel from Japan, Japan puts tariffs on the products we make with that steel. I believe the goal is for no tariffs at all. Let the free market decide where we buy our stuff and sell our stuff. mark

What portion of GNP, or how many industries can be displaced before exports of other products are unable to compensate?

Trump still hasn’t watched an Uncle Milton video on how bad tariffs will be

But why should we object for them to give foreign aid... as we have learned with Chinese steel, if the steel they are delivering is deliberately faulty and weakens the defense and prosperity of our nation, that would be cause to reject their foreign aid. While friedman is right for the most part, he does not consider the motives of bad actors looking to weaken partnered nations. His theories only hold up in a vaccum of utopian thought. It is entirely understandable being as adam smith speaks eloquently about the invisible hand that a butcher would not sell bad meat as there would be few customers and thus hurt his business. It is after all easy to determine good meat from bad. It is far more difficult to determine good steel from bad.

Tariffs and import duties are one of the few things that Milton Friedman got wrong. And specifically, retaliatory tariffs. I agree that the nation that imposes tariffs is wrong, but the nation suffering from those tariffs is completely justified in imposing tariffs in retaliation.

This whole argument falls apart when "Japan" isn't playing as fairly with imports as this guy's utopian view of world trade suggests.
