Dangerous Gibraltar Airport | British Airways @ Gibraltar | 4K

Gibraltar Airport is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the World. Not at least because of it's only 1777m long runway, but also because of the 4-lane Winston Churchill Avenue, which is crossing the runway. This is very unique. My 4K Video shows Airbus A320 jets of British Airways with flights from and to London at the Airport including a 'nice' crosswind approach. Captured on 09.04.2016.

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain. The landscape is dominated by the Rock of Gibraltar at the foot of which is a densely populated city area, home to over 30,000 people, primarily Gibraltarians.[10] It shares a maritime border with Morocco. Under the Gibraltar constitution of 2006, Gibraltar has limited powers of self-government, with some responsibilities, such as defence and foreign relations, remaining with the British government.

In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession on behalf of the Habsburg claim to the Spanish throne. The territory was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. During World War II it was an important base for the Royal Navy as it controlled the entrance and exit to the Mediterranean Sea, which is only 8 miles (13 km) wide at this naval "choke point". It remains strategically important, with half the world's seaborne trade passing through the strait. Today Gibraltar's economy is based largely on tourism, online gambling, financial services and cargo ship refuelling.

The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations because Spain asserts a claim to the territory. Gibraltarians rejected proposals for Spanish sovereignty in a 1967 referendum and, in a 2002 referendum, the idea of shared sovereignty was also rejected.

So I just moved to gibraltar a few months ago and the joy from walking across an airstrip just to go to a grocery... Hasn't gotten old. It's super cool

This has to be one of the most awesome airports and definitely one of the most complex ones as well. It’s complexity is what makes Gibraltar airport such an awesome spot for aviation lovers

I like this airport a lot cause you can see the airplanes at close range without even going to the airport to see one.

Been across that runway several times, both on foot & in a car - always exciting. Landing there is pretty cool too 😊.

I was lucky enough to be part of a crew from the Uk who re surfaced the runway 1976 . Great memories of Gib & the People who are so proud to be called British.

That moment you can't cross the street 'cause a plane is crossing.

I went to Gibraltar 4 years ago, it's quite an experience landing and taking off there, also crossing the runway on foot is fun too.

Man i climbed the rock and dined in the restaurant at the top after walking the Mediterranean walk. this is such a beautiful place to just relax for a couple days before taking a ferry into North Africa. Always hot and barely ever rains. I stayed on the spanish side right next to border control. So beautiful

I love Gibraltar and we visit regularly. Fascinating, beautiful views from the rock and a place to totally relax. Have never had any problems flying in but bad weather can make landing difficult and some flights are diverted to Malaga. The short runway and potential for strong cross winds means that only certain experienced pilots can fly there.

To the novice pilot, "You want to line up with the sailing yacht on your left and the motor yacht on your right.""Oh, and watch out for the cars."

I have landed a Boeing 737 many times at Gibralter airport and don't consider it dangerous. The road crossing only caused me problems once when the trafic lights on it failed and I had to climb away from 600ft and circle round the rock and make another approach. They had got the police out to close the road this time. Strong winds from the south causing eddies round the rock can close the airport. Its a while since I retired and I don't know if the Spanish are still doing their best to make things harder.

It's like when a train crosses, instead you get hit by a plane!!

Prestwick Airport in Scotland used to be like this many years ago. Look at an aerial shot of the airport and you can still see where Main Street, Monkton used to cross over the runway.

I was there 2 years ago, it's pretty cool standing on the roadside watching planes arriving/departing. I flew there with the excellent but sadly now defunct Monarch.

I was stationed in ATC a few years ago and you need to be in Gib in February to get the full meaning of dangerous approach when you get wind whipping over the rock. However, since the 09 has been flattened out, know coming in over Spain that has changed the whole level of danger to this airport.
