Something I just realized watching this is another thing that seperates Guts and Griffith; while Guts goes through the most terrible suffering imaginable, he continues to fight. But in this critical moment Griffith gives up, triggering the eclipse.

seeing griffith’s fall and descent into becoming femto is still hard to watch, even if i do hate him for what he did to the band of the hawk. his arc is on par with guts

The animation of this trilogy is actually impressive. The emotions were shown very well.

I remember reading berserk for the first time and when he was caught with the princess, I really thought it was all apart of his plan...I was wrong

While reading Berserk I realized something. Since his birth, Guts was going through traumatizing stuff left and right and much like Griffith couldn't really open up. But unlike Griffith, Guts was able to find comfort in the band of the hawk and was able to open up to Casca. It was the first time he actually talks about his past trauma and kinda works through it which makes us and Casca think that this is a flawed but great man.
The same can't be said about Griffith. We see Griffith as this god that always has a plan and while he does some questionable stuff never really struggles. But we see that the stuff he does for his dream does affect him. He, also. has struggles and insecurities but unlike Guts he can't open up about it to anyone. When he almost opens up to Casca, he realizes Casca isn't really comforting him rather she wants to see that perfect god that never struggles so he switches back to his persona. He dealt with everything by himself. That is until Guts left. Guts was the person he got closest to. He was the only person that could make him forget about his obsession he calls a dream. So, him leaving was devastating since the one person he was kinda opening up to left. This is something he wasn't able to deal with alone. Now, he really has nowhere to go. Guts left and everyone (even the band of the hawk) see him leagues above them and unapproachable. So, there really is no one there to comfort him. So, in this broken state of mind, he goes to princess charlotte to find comfort but he makes a mistake and gives in to lust and pleasure. When he tries to leave and gets cornered that's when I realized something. Not only the characters but even we as an audience held him in that god stature. Cause I and many others thought that he had a plan and he could get out easily. We all thought he couldn't make a mistake. That he wasn't human. To him even beings in a higher dimension (us) thought he was a god. I thought that even after a year of torture he would be alright. I even thought that that man with a broken man and body wasn't Griffith rather it was someoen else and he had a master plan. But we were wrong. He was human. He made a mistake and that costed him his mind and body. All of our images of Griffith shattered instantly. Now, we could only look on with sadness and pity that this once god that could take back a kingdom with a few soldiers is now in this broken state unable to walk, talk, eat or do anything. Griffith saw that everyone looked at him with only pity and this broke him even more. That's why he ran away cause he didn't everyone to see him in this sorry state. He knew that he was just a sleeping corpse that was taking up food and medicine and that broke him even more. In this state, unable to do anything he tried to commit suicide. But he couldn't even do that. He was literally useless and in this desperate state he summons the godhand and does all those heinous acts. He hated Guts at that time cause he saw that Guts got comfort from Casca. Something he didn't get. In his absolute lowest, without receiving the help he needed, he turns into a monster.
The same can also be said for Guts. After, the eclipse, Guts got consumed by hatred and he abandoned Casca and was slowly turning into a monster little by little. In the same way Griffith broke under immense pressure, Guts was also breaking. This spiraled into Guts getting possessed and hurting Casca, forever ruining their relationship. But unlike Guts, other people were there to help him. Puck helped him to start opening up. Shierke literally saved him from becoming a monster. Farnesse took a lot of the burden off of his shoulder. So, he was able to keep struggling and kinda found peace.

What I'm trying to say that, humans aren't perfect. We constantly make mistakes and stupid decisions. Every one of us can and will break given the right amount of pressure. That is why we are social creatures. Together, we can go through the darkest nights. Humanity's greatest enemy is loneliness. Griffith gave into his demons because of that while Guts was able to keep struggling because he had other people. We see people committing heinous stuff daily. We tend to ignore the fact that they were lonely and broken people that didn't get the right help. We never notice someone slowly breaking. We only see the aftermath. People commit suicide and suddenly people start coming out of the woodworks saying that they wish they could've helped. I gotta ask. Where were you when they were breaking? When they were crying themselves to sleep? When they couldn't find the strength to get up once again? Why was it that when they were looking at that noose they weren't second guessing themselves thinking about you? We need to be better. So, I say talk to the person sitting at the back saying nothing. Maybe they have just as much to say. Ask that kid that seems perfect and unapproachable. Maybe he's also breaking and can't find the help and comfort he needs at the moment. The only thing that can keep people from becoming monsters and doing heinous acts is the comfort that can be found from other humans. This is, at least, one way to interpret Kentaro Miura's masterpiece.

Idk why but it’s almost heart wrenching to see a man as high of stature as Griffith to be at his lowest and crying.
Edit: wasn’t expecting to get 3k likes, lol well thanks for agreeing with Meh

People argue about wether guts or Griffiths suffering was worse, but people don’t realize that suffering cannot be measured, it’s an emotion and the strength of emotion is determined by the person before the stimuli

It’s possible that either one suffered more than the other

It took a lot to break Griffith. And even then, the Godhand manipulated his decision further during the eclipse.. his life was perfectly set up for him to turn evil, even against his will. Remember you can only sacrifice people you love.. he loved his comrades, every single one

People with a time machine:

-"I'm your grandson"

+"Really?"

Berserk fans with a time machine: "Nooo Griffith don't fuck the princess"

Edit: I made this comment before Kentaro Miura passed away. Of course Berserk fans, if they had a time machine, they would go tell him to go check his heart and circulatory system and take care of himself. Rest In Peace

What fucks me up about this is when Griffith is weakly slamming his hands into the water. I don’t know why but that single moment made me cry.

Wanting to end but not having the strength to do it. Bashing your hands against a surface that will never give or break.

It just got to me in some strange way.

Griffith never fell. He was always like that. Always on the search for power. Always willing to give away everything to be king. Guys wasn’t a friend he was a possession. He was the first person to tell Griffith “No” and get away with it. The God hand picks those who are destined for evil, not those who can be influenced.

I knew that moment of Griffith crying was emotional but damn, it's really awesome to see it in anime form. Hope some competent studio picks up Berserk
