Windows to Sky ~ Song of the Week #18: Just the Rain

I'm not a big fan of reality TV, and I feel a little queasy about pitting one person's passions and heartfelt creations against another's to measure who's "best". ("Okay, Poe, Cummings, Shelley, prepare for a read-off for best poet!")

But the people behind this contest are incredibly nice and supportive and asked me (and gave me a bar tab), so I participated last night anyway... and, well, won!

Suddenly this whole contest thing seems like a great idea!

Because I'm a stupid typical human in that way. A stupid typical human who just won something, so I don't even mind.

It's just fresh grapes. You know, the opposite of the sour kind.

(I think this victory just means I'm moving on to the finals, but that's fine.)

A couple of hours before going on, I decided to pull this song out of mothballs, and now I share it with you. I wrote "Just the Rain" when my fiancee and I broke up. It was a very rainy winter for California, much like this one has been.

I wanted an orchestra behind this song and someday, I shall have it.

Mixology 101 is a really beautiful space and I hope to play there again in the next few months. Their schmancy cockatils were highly praised by my friends who'd come, and their restaurant (Planet Dailies) has delicious food. I was playing over a busy clamorous bar full of happy customers and it's really interesting to hear the tracks (mixed and cleaned up a bit) without all the audience's sounds. In places, I'm pushing harder than I would want to, and in other places, perhaps not hard enough. And I miss the cello part where the solo goes. But still I do enjoy this recording, Fresh to You from Reality Itself! (tm)

The background snapshot was taken by the lovely Victoria Lake, all the way from Arizona, on her cell phone. If you do jumping jacks or get yourself really dizzy, you can pretend it's video.
