Spanish explorers are actually responsible for bringing potatoes to Europe in the first place.

A Spanish explorer described potatoes in a journal entry dating back to 1577 as "a kind of earth nut which, after it is boiled, is as tender as cooked chestnuts." It was pretty typical at the time in Spanish tradition to fry basically anything, so fries definitely could have been on the menu back in the 16th century.

Apparently, fries were first served in Galicia (an autonomous area of northwest Spain), and eventually made their way up to Belgium. Belgium, at the time, was called the Spanish Netherlands. So fries became popular in Belgium because the tradition moved through Spanish communities.

They're called French Fries because of the cut. Like French Style Green Beans. French cut is food cut into long thin strips, a little thicker than julienne.

Because French fries roll off the tongue easier than saying Belgian fries.

Very nice channel! However would be cool if you did voiceovers yourself!

Very insightful. However the music background is not fitting at all I even stopped the video to check if it was originating from another source but then realised it was part of the video. A subtler music would better highlight the content in my opinion.

The are cut in the FRENCH or long thin style of cutting veggies then fried, hence French fries.

If you've all finished guessing, here are the facts (all documented): the Spanish brought tomato and potato plants back from the Americas in the 16th century but used them only for decoration. The Florentines were the first to eat the fruits of either plant AND the first to deep-fry anything in Europe, including potato strips! One should never underestimate the influence of the Italian Renaissance----do your homework!

Here in México we still called them Fried potatoes, or papas fritas.

Which is what literally is.
