Am I the only one who feels special and happy when she gives us the motivating taps on the screen and says, "You got this!"

About 10 years ago I got this question from a recruiter in a screening call. I did exactly as suggested here. Instead of offering my salary, I offered her a high-but-reasonable fair market amount that was the top end of my target salary. She pressed me so hard to find out my current pay but I kept rebuffing her. She ultimately didn't move me forward as a candidate. At the time I was angry and disappointed, but in hindsight that was a HUGE red flag and Im fortunate to have avoided that company.

If you have a hard time saying no or I can't disclose, redirect with something like... "I understand a fair market range to be somewhere between (insert desired salary range), this is what I see myself being valued at." If they keep pressing, red flag. But also redirect with "I already mentioned the salary range. That's all I'm comfortable disclosing at this time."

After a ton of interviews, I have concluded that this is the best answer:
"Unfortunately, I am under an NDA so I cannot provide you with the exact number. Can you share your approved budget for the role, so I can tell you if it matches my expectations."

Mostly honest and consistent 😊😅

As a hiring manager in California I would not ask this question. However, Id much prefer someone say, "I am uncomfortable answering that question." rather than saying, "I'm not a liberty to disclise that." In California, employers cannot restrict employees from discussing thier pay.

Erin! I just got that question, what my current salary was on my ONLINE APPLICATION! that only accepted a number ("negotiable, " or, my favorite response, "Make me an offer I can't refuse!" for example was not allowed!)

I ALWAYS lie. Always always always. And they always ask too! F them. Do what's best for them, just like they do!

Lmao “if that’s too many words” 😂 yeah, it was! Thanks Erin! :)

And what if they say there is no budget, respond by telling them the research you have done based upon the role and industry minimums and maximums. Then, tell them the job description requirements you meet or exceed. Then, be ready to negotiate after the offer. 😊

"I would prefer not to disclose" works every time just fine.

That was a better answer than I thought Erin.
I thought to say something like "I am adequately and fairly remunerated and my rate is comparable to the industry standard for someone with my skills and experience."

Got this question on a previous job aswell. Told them that it is under the current average for what my job description is. Hence the reason why Im looking for another job.
That way they know what my intention is and that I know the current market value of the job im doing/applying for. If the company is not willing to pay me more than it isnt a good fit in the end and not worth my time.

This can also be applied if you get asked for salary expectations. The current average is X and based on my experience and skill set I would consider X to Y amount per year.
X and Y can be either the real current market range for what you offer or you can also say numbers that are closer to what you are actually aiming for. Keep in mind most companies will take the lower number as an offer most likely so if you want 70k a year that should be your starting range.

I was once ghosted after an interview, the salary was listed as "competitive" and when asked how much I expected in remuneration I said minimum £1 above minimum wage (it was entry level but I had experience) to make it financially viable. They couldn't give me a reason as to why they didn't hire me, but then I got a job with less responsibility that was paying what I expected. Then got a 6k pay rise and even less responsibility when I moved to a role in a different department 😂

Literally last year I doubled my salary thanks to that very same question 😂. Boss asked how much I earned in the previous job, I made up the answer by doubling the real number, and ended up saying to my boss: ”at least I should be making the same amount”. And voilá! Double your salary each time you change job place 😂

Just avoid these companies. If they start with disrespect it will only go downhill once you work there.

I work at a fairly respectful company and the longer I work the more our mutual respect grows.

They even told me to ask for a raise😅
