Canon HF-M41 FullHD camcorder I got for 29.50€ - Review

UPDATE: The camcorder is now dead. I got the replacement battery and tried to charge it in the camcorder using the genuine Canon power supply seen in this video. The battery charged for a little while, then the charge LED indicated an error. I went to power up the camcorder after that happened but it wouldn't turn on anymore. No matter what I do now, the camcorder is dead. This is most likely a protection mode. Charging the battery caused an error that was written into a memory that is checked each time the camcorder is turned on. If a fault was written to the memory the camcorder does not power up. Only the Canon service would have the ability to clear this error memory.
I assume the original owners of the camcorder ran into the same problem and that's why they forgot the device in their basement. After years of sitting there without power, the internal backup battery discharged completely and the error memory lost its contents and therefore the camcorder was able to turn on again. Until I reinstalled a battery. The entry in the error memory has been recreated and since I had the camcorder connected to the power supply for several days to charge the internal backup battery, it will now take months until the memory looses its contents again.

Still a better picture quality than my main camera. My camera claims to do full HD, and even though the video files ARE full HD, I think the actual sensor in it is no where near that.

I STILL use this thing from time to time on paid work. It's a nice 24 fps crash cam or backup cam to just sit somewhere and record very good completely manual footage with. Connect it to an Atomos for even better post work. Cool little camera, this.

Looks decent! So there's no "real" progressive on this camera? And the fastest it can shoot is 25 frames on 50i?

That’s a nice camera especially with the generous amount of storage capacity with two the cards. Does it accept 64 gig cards?

Thanks for your detailed and helpful video. I have this camcorder which I bought new years ago. I use it as my main camera when I do Multicam shoots and also as a stand alone camcorder. I am very pleased with it but I must admit you seem to know more about the tech side than I do after all these years. I bought it mainly for the fact that it had a viewfinder and a external mic input but it works so well I might have bought it anyway. I wanted extra batteries but at the time the Canon batteries were so costly I bought one that work with it just fine. Of course I get a warning every time that I should be using Canon batteries but once I go past it they works very expect that I don't get battery life info on screen. Small price to pay. Sorry to run on but I did find you video helpful.

Good find, what do you intend to use the camera for?

One thing that give me pause about this camera is the focal range...Canon says it's equivalent to 43.6mm to 436mm in full frame terms. That's not much on the wide angle. I think I would rather have a wider lens than that, even if it means giving up some telephoto reach.

Have you found that to be an issue?

I do love the dual SD card slots not so much for relay but for backup recording in a case gets corrupted. You can't re-shoot a wedding.

As far as I’m aware that’s just a battery problem as heard before canon went down this pain in the arse line of swapping batteries all over the place with these camera units so even though it should work on that one it won’t due to something they do with the battery information 😩

With the built in memory errors popping up, can you disable the built in memory and just use the SD cards?

I see that cam has a 32gb hard drive. Do you think changing that internal hard drive may fix error issues? I have the Canon Vixia HF R40 and the screen options are almost identical
