Many of us dream of flying to space. But how about entering outer space on a rocket plane twice? This is an incredible true story of Joseph Walker who flew to the edge of space. He dreamed of making the first-ever suborbital plane flight - and his dream came true. Despite all the risks of the X-15 program, the courageous pilot pushed the very limits of their piloting skills and physical health to master groundbreaking technology. Let's listen to this true story.

Doesn’t sound like he accidentally flew into space. It was a very thought out flight plan with no room for error.

I actually imagined planes flying to space whenever I was on a plane. I can’t believe it truly happened!

To anybody who's reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the darks thoughts, the overthinking, the doubt exit your mind right now. May clarity replace confusion. May peace and calmness fill your life..

The U.S. definition of "space" is 50 miles (80 kilometers); the international definition is 100 kilometers (62 miles). Yes, the X-15 did fly into "space, " but it never came close to achieving the speed needed to go into orbit. Actually, the X-15 (and later the X-20) could have been America's first real spaceplane. Just put either one atop a Titan missile. The X-20 was designed to be launched this way.

As a teenager in the early '60's, I remember the excitement that the X-15 flights created!
I even recall a somewhat disappointing film, titled "X-15", starring Charles Bronson &
Mary Tyler Moore, about the project! I've also heard that those 'civilian' pilots were not
chosen as the first Astronauts, because they wanted too much money for Space travel!
At any rate, those intrepid "near-Astronauts", need to be better remembered in history!

The x-15 was designed to fly into the stratosphere. The title should be accidently flew to far into space.

Not sure the images (at 03:16 and 06:53) of the mid-air collision in which Joseph Walker and Carl Cross both lost their lives is all that uplifting, it was a very sad event.

"Clutch Cargo" cartoons in the 1960s was about the X-15. Cool stuff. I remember being hypnotized at about age 5 or 8 by those cartoons.

Oh wow. This B-52 had a tandem cockpit (one pilot infront of the other) 0:16 like B-47s, before they revised the design.

Space is 100km or 330, 000 feet (62miles) above sea level (the Karman Line). The record for an aircraft was the SR71 Blackbird which made it to 85, 000 feet. FAR SHORT of the actual edge of space. The X-15 is a rocket, not a jet powered aircraft (it carried its own oxygen).

The Firefly from that cool tv show is a possibility.

The closest thing to an actual Star Wars plane. Who knows somehow we can figure out how to do that. So this is before the moon landing right? So that makes him the first guy to even see or go to outer space.
