In this episode of Hiking News, we delve into some of the most compelling updates in the outdoor and tech world. First, there are significant leaks about the Garmin Phoenix 8. A private page on the Garmin website was accidentally indexed by Google, revealing that the new Phoenix 8 will feature an AMOLED screen, combining the best aspects of the Phoenix and Epix series. This suggests a move towards more versatile and high-performance hiking watches that cater to various user preferences.

Additionally, we discuss Google's upcoming announcement of the Pixel 9, which is expected to include satellite connectivity. This new feature could revolutionize how hikers and outdoor enthusiasts stay connected in remote areas, providing an essential safety net for those venturing off the grid. The integration of satellite technology in smartphones could be a game-changer for navigation and emergency communication.

In more somber news, we cover a disturbing incident at Yellowstone National Park, where a potential mass shooting was averted. This highlights the importance of staying vigilant and informed about safety issues while enjoying national parks. The episode also touches on the tragic events involving park rangers and wildlife, emphasizing the need for responsible behavior in natural settings to preserve both human and animal lives.

Stay tuned for these updates and more, including insights into new features for popular hiking apps and tools, as well as critical information about forest fires affecting trails on the West Coast. Make sure to subscribe for the latest news and tips to enhance your hiking adventures.

Followup to my Garmin Fenix / Epix info - right after posting this I got an email from Garmin telling me the Fenix 7 and Epix are on sale. Good sign that something new is coming.

Thanks for such a comprehensive report, Chris! 😊

An app for forest fires must be the Watch Duty app, the newest update integrates the ALERT camera network. The only problem is that out on the trails you often don't have service. One of my concerns is getting caught behind a fire line of a fire that started after you started hiking.

I work in urgent care and people get freaked out by sniffles these days, really. Then they're disappointed when they get negative Covid tests. Honestly, be happy you're not seriously sick! Speaking of stupidity, I'm really tired of people thinking that wildlands are Disneyland. Go to a freakin amusement park if that's what you want, a national park is NOT that. LOL

The forest service partnering with indigenous groups is interesting, would definitely like to hear more of what comes out of this.

I waded through 100' of stinging nettles and had my legs go numb. I self-rescued; I carry benadryl.

Love these updates, but I will say that the parks need to severely increase the fines for negligent behavior. Having been to 5 parks in the last month across the west, there’s just so many people that disrespect the rules and signage.

You mentioned you don’t use all trails all the time. What are you using now? Still on Gaia even with the price rise? Moved to onX? What other apps you use or recommend? Could be nice that you have a new updated video on this.

Hiking News is one of my favourite things you do. Stoke for the highest Class 1 project. Your channel is amazing. I am too poor to financially support it, but I do what I can with the like button and comment and clicking your ads. Take care.

Whats the best app(s) for the US National Parks? Just got back from visiting Glacier National Park. What app(s) would you have used there?

HG great content and a huge amount of useful information. Your videos were a huge assistance in my updating to a Garmin GPSMAP 67i . I wanted to integrate InReach and GPS into one device and have data collection for my hunting and overlanding activities being able to be saved into one program.
But I have run into one issue that you may able to do a video on.
New South Wales (Australia), Department of Primary Industry manages hunting access in State Forest here. You must book in and carry their current maps, largely to stay clear of active logging and forestry activities and for numbers management. Yet, it appears with Garmin's change to MTP from USB Mass Storage the .kmz files DPI uses, wont upload.

Am I missing something.

Keep the great information coming.

Is Garmin considered the best watch for hiking? I'm looking for something that lasts about 4 days on the trail.

Pixel 7 and 8 also have that Exynos 5300 modem that technically supports it as well. But this is 50/50 still whether or not it will work on those phones. I hope so, I have the 8 Pro and I just got it lol.

I was in the back country a few weeks back and my Iphone gps couldn't find where I was, but my EPIX showed me exactly where I was. It seems like the AWU GPS doesn't work well without cell service.
