Wheels or Tracks? What's Best For Heavy Equipment (excavators, skid steers, loaders, etc.)?

At FortisTracks, we often get asked: “What’s the difference between skid steers and track loaders?” Obviously, one is on wheels and the other is on tracks, but what difference does that make when operating? Does one have more capabilities than the other?

We made this video to help you understand why you would choose a skid steer over a track loader, and vice versa.

The benefits of using a wheeled skid steer include:

Smoother operation and control - Generally speaking, the operation and control of a wheeled vehicle are smoother. This means less strain on operators who sit in the equipment for long hours, as well as an easier learning curve.

Better fuel efficiency (on average) - Depending on size of the machine and use, you’ll typically get better fuel efficiency out of a wheeled vehicle because it requires less horsepower to run.

Higher max speed - If speed on your jobsite is important, go with a skid steer. Max speeds are much higher on a skid steer than they are on most track loaders, meaning you can travel long distances much faster.

Better mobility - It’s easier to turn around on a dime in a skid steer, making it a more mobile machine for tight construction sites.

The benefits of using a track loader (aka tracked skid steer) include:

Greater stability - tracks offer much better stability when working on steep areas, soft ground, or mud. This means you’ll be able to navigate on top of tougher terrain without the risk of getting stuck!

More power (on average) - Depending on the size of the machine, you’ll typically get higher lift and carry capacity out of a track loader due to its increased stability and (generally) higher horsepower engine.

Better traction on steep slopes - If you’re working on angles, a tracked skid steer will help you climb those tough hills better than a skid steer on wheels.

Better control on unstable ground - If the ground is uneven, a slow-moving track loader will give you much better control when driving forwards and backwards, or pivoting and rotating.

Less risk of damaging sensitive ground - When ground pressure is a concern, go with a track loader. The vehicle’s weight is spread out more evenly on a larger surface area, minimizing ground pressure on sensitive areas.

Whether you’re a contractor, construction company, farmer, operator, or just have an interest in purchasing heavy equipment, we hope this video helps you understand what the major differences are and why you would choose a skid steer over a track loader, or a track loader over a skid steer.

You can't say a tracked machine has more power than a wheeled one, it depends on each model and the engine HP rating.
