I've read all the books. For me, Red October is the best because it is the most accurate, but I don't really think any of the adaptations give the books justice. They're just too layered and complex to be done justice in a film. I think if the TV series adapted some of the books, it would turn out much better. Especially since some of the story lines could adapt well with Russia.

To help clarify: Patriot games takes place before The Hunt for Red October. That might help you understand why he is going back to the CIA so early, it's kind of his origin.

Yeah, it's amazing how John McTiernan made Predator, Die Hard and Red October back to back. That's one of the most amazing triple slam dunks in the history of cinema (at least on the pulp side).

Clear and present danger is absolutely my favourite. Seen it multiple times.

My favorite is by far Patriot Games! That’s also the only book I read by Tom Clancy and, whew, it was so detailed and analytical it was hard to get through. I think that’s why I love the movie so much: the screenwriter did an excellent job adapting and condensing it into something actually thrilling!

I have seen Shadow Recruit, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger and I have to agree with your no.1 pick. That office confrontation scene between Ryan and Ritter had me at the edge of my seat!

You're not the only one.
I used to think that same way about the hunt for red October when i was younger but then once i got older I realized how awesome the movie was

I love these movies. Although I passed on Shadow Recruit. I had guessed you'd go with a safe ranking of Shadow -> Sum -> Danger -> Patriot -> October! Nope! Although I disagree with your ranking of Patriot Games (my favorite) I still respect your opinion about the scope of the film. It's smaller and more intimate for sure. I'm just glad you picked another Phillip Noyce directed film as your favorite. Clear and Present Danger is great, and the convoy scene is one of the best action scenes ever made. I hear agencies have used that scene to analyze and train for that sort of danger. Great stuff is found throughout this franchise.

Interesting list! Nice to see Clear and Present Danger at the top of the list. I've always felt that one was a bit underrated. The idea behind doing Patriot Games as the second film was to make a film that featured Jack Ryan front in center in the movie since in The Hunt For Red October, he is very much part of an ensemble cast, which makes sense to me. Like you said it is a very good thriller and one I personally would have ranked a bit higher. My Ranking:

1. The Hunt for Red October
2. Clear and Present Danger
3. Patriot Games
4. The Sum of All Fears
5. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Very underrated series imo, I really like how Jack Ryan is unique compared to the more known spies such as Jason Bourne, Ethan Hunt and James Bond. My ranking:
5) Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
4) Patriot Games
3) The Sum Of All Fears
2) The Hunt For Red October
1) Clear And Present Danger

They're all good imo, Shadow Recruit is definitely the weakest but Chris Pine was good in the role. The Sum Of All Fears is underrated.
