The UN Security Council has adopted Resolution 2735 with 14 votes in favor and Russia abstaining, aiming to secure a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza through a three-phase plan.

Phase one involves an immediate and complete ceasefire, the release of hostages, the return of remains of killed hostages, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners. It also calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas of Gaza and the safe distribution of humanitarian assistance.

Phase two includes a permanent end to hostilities in exchange for the release of all remaining hostages and a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Phase three initiates a multi-year reconstruction plan for Gaza and the return of any remaining deceased hostages' bodies to Israel.

The resolution emphasizes that if negotiations for phase one extend beyond six weeks, the ceasefire will continue as long as talks persist. Israel has accepted the deal, and Hamas has expressed readiness to engage in indirect negotiations.

The resolution rejects any attempt at demographic or territorial changes in Gaza and reiterates the commitment to a two-state solution, emphasizing the importance of unifying Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.
