The off-centre Rado DiaMaster

The off-centre Rado DiaMaster
If you’re looking for a watch that’s a little left-of-centre style-wise, look no further. Rado’s idiosyncratic DiaMaster takes many of the conventions of fine watchmaking and turns them, if not on their heads, at least a little bit sideways. And the resulting watch is, it must be said, quite charming.
Of course, there are still some familiar Rado hallmarks on display, like the high-tech ceramic case. There’s also an ever-reliable automatic movement that isn’t content to be relegated to the caseback, instead taking centre stage on the dial side — to great effect. The case is hefty, at 43mm, and rated to 100 metres, which is a nice touch. There are four different variations on the theme, but we were most taken by this black-on-black option.
TRANSCRIPT:
Most of the time watches are all about symmetry, hands are n the middle of a perfectly round case, with markers exactly where you would expect them. It's a time-honored design, but it's not the only way of doing things. A great example is this watch here - the Rado DiaMaster master XL. This watch is a celebration of the asymmetric. The hours and minutes are offset with the hands suspended by a prominent bridge. One of the few linear design elements at the play here. The almost ovoid aperture in the dial reveals a Geneva striped main plate, and a raised gear train connecting hours and seconds. There's even a sunken date display. The movement is quite small in the 43mm traffic case. Something that I'm normally not too much of a fan of. But, given the fact that Rado has made a design feature by offsetting it to the left, I think it works well. This unusual and interesting design has been executed in 4 colorways, ranging from $3,950 up to $4,200 Australian dollars.
