🙋🏼 ABOUT ME: Hi guys! My name is Alyona. I was born in Russia. I'm a musician. And I love art, makeup, fashion, style and beautiful environments. I love playing with makeup and fashion, but at the same time, I’m quite a minimalistic person. I don't like the idea of being fixated on the body too much. I have an alternative and unconventional viewpoint on beauty, the body types and face shapes. I love helping other women find their "it" and finally discover their beauty and boost their confidence.

I have several series on my channel that you might be interested in such as: Body Types, Contouring, Makeup History and Makeup Transformations. Also some random beauty hacks about skin care, hair, nails and beauty in general.

They look so costumy and cartoonish most of the time because they are not historical accurate. Those people dress as costume nowadays ripresents those years.
All the photos shown that seem costumy in fact were not historically
accurate

To me, the elements described as “clownish” in this video such as the cherry and polka dot prints, the bandana hairstyle and the really heavy makeup are very stereotypical for the 1950s and more rockabilly/modern pinup style rather than authentic 1950s. The hairstyle with the scarf for instance is more 1940s, when women had to tie up their hair because they were working in factories during the war even though it did look different from the modern variations! I dress 50s everyday and strife to look more authentic, so I tend to stay away from those elements. A lot of outfits worn by for instance Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Sophia Loren could still be quite relevant today: a high neck sweater or a blouse combined with a calf length pencil or circle skirt for 50s (or a knee length a-line skirt for the forties!) looks really authentic with the right hairstyle and accessories and modern without those. I could go on for hours about this haha but I really think that if the outfit is quite simple you can kind of make it more fifties or modern depending on what you’re going for with hair, accessories and makeup!

The cheesy costume-ish ones are pretty inaccurate to what the 50s actually was. This is why I avoid vintage reproduction clothing, because it's usually geared towards this modern pin-up look that I'm not a fan of.

I think the trouble comes when we copy an era, rather than take inspiration from it. It's the style-equivalent of copying a picture you meant to use just as reference.

Dita von Teese and German YouTuber Shirinatra have elevated vintage fashion to a high art form for the modern era. Yet their daily looks are gorgeous and so wearable.

Dressing 50’s is not clownish. Dressing in bright colors is not too much.
We are all going to leave this earth one day, and I would rather say “I wore what I wanted” than “I wore what I was told looked best on me by a strangers on the internet because I feared peoples’ opinions of me”

I'm a bit confused as to why anyone would think that vintage fashion looks clownish or costumey.
Just dwelve into real used vintage clothes from the time and there you go! If that's expensive (it really doesn't need to be), as many said, maybe stray away from rockabilly subculture's take on 50s clothes as it's entirely its own thing (but still not costumey??).
You can buy a lot of 50s silhouette clothes a bit everywhere. It's just about studying the era, in order to retain what makes that silhouette and what doesn't look cheap, and thankfully we have a sea of information at the tip of our fingers now! :)

If you feel costumey still when wearing it, I'd say that it's perhaps just that you're not comfortable in that style of dress, and it's perhaps not for you:) sometimes we like a style without it resonating with who we are, and that's when it feels not right.

I wear vintage style all the time, and I completely agree with everything that you said. I am a theatrical romantic body type. I feel that this vintage silhouette from the 1940s to 1950s makes my body look nice, and it complements my personality. I think the moment it looks like a costume is when you try to only stick in one time period strictly. Sometimes I wear a petticoat to make my skirt stand out, but if I do I make sure that everything else is very modern. You can do that with prints, Color combinations, or accessories. Rockabilly is not the only way to do vintage clothing😁 GREAT JOB ALY!!!

I think Lana del Rey used to do this very well during her Born To Die era.

The main problem I find with this video is that it just lacks research and is based on very stereotypical modern pinup or just exaggerated retro (not vintage) styles, which often mix 1940s with 1950s & 60s and use modern fabrics, cuts and accessories - very surprising, as usually Aly’s videos are very well thought through. Where I see a solution is to play with the 3 layers of vintage style: the silhouette, the texture and the color palette. An outfit lands in the costume-ish, clownish esthetic for me, is when the silhouette is not historically accurate (wrong length, waistline, shoulders, etc.), on top the garment and accessories are made out of modern materials (for example the typical stiff polyester with elastase, so the texture does not work at all) and we have a very obviously modern color palette on top. I personally find that silhouette is key, especially when it comes to the undergarments (they make a huge difference) and the cut of the clothes. Keep at least 1 of these 3 features and play around with the rest.

I just discovered this video and for most of us wanting to start transitioning our wardrobe to fully vintage, this is a downer and off-putting video. Not all vintage lovers are wanting to incorporate a modern twist. Just saying. I'll check out other videos on the channel as I see you have tons of love here regarding your other uploads. Before I leave though, I want to encourage those who are looking to go vintage to do you and wear whatever you feel flatters your body and most of all makes you feel good when you wear it. ❤️❤️

Very interesting to see Dita von Teese featured, because I would call her a modern style icon. I'm sure you've got plenty in the pipeline for us, but if you want to share more perspective of other contemporary style icons, I would love to hear it. The one you did about the Kardashian was really excellent.

Do what makes you happy. Never concern yourself with the opinions of anyone who uses derogatory words to describe anything that brings you joy

I personally think that what makes pinup costume-like is the patterns and the puffiness of the dresses. Thank you for this video, very insightful

Am watching now so don't know if you will mention this but avoid the cherries! Also, search real vintage "every day" images for inspo for hair and makeup and avoid present day rockabilly/pinup images. Victory rolls should not be full rolls that you can see through. I plan on making a video on do's and don'ts from the perspective of someone who does dress vintage inspired pretty much every day. On how to not look costumey that is.

If you want to try vintage style, please check out Karolina Zebrowska's video about what real 1950's fashion looked like. What most people think of the 50's was like is not true at all, & even Aly has some of the advice wrong in this video (probably because it's hard to research since the misinformation about this era is so prevalent). Modern "50's vintage" girls looks clownish because they aren't historically accurate, so it's like a Halloween costume instead of clothes.

I think that a lot of what makes vintage look 'clownish' is if people don't fully feel comfortable in something, and also don't fully commit to material that doesn't look cheap. Unless you're buying actual vintage, a lot of cheaper replica fashion can look very 'Party-City, ' has that ugly polyester-sheen, and doesn't look like something someone would actually wear outside of a party. The people I see who best replicate vintage looks wear fabrics that are obviously more expensive, or breathable, or actually things people would wear back in the day. They also tend to know their history, and not mash together five different aesthetics from 1940-1960, which are obviously completely different periods. New Look Dior mixed with early 40s factory worker, for example, will probably just look weird, because that's the modern equivalent of mixing 2006 harem pants with 2000 denim crop tops.

The 50s doesn't look clownish it's very feminine, chic and colourful its about styling and choosing the cuts which suit your body

There is a German YouTuber on here whose dress sense is inspired by the 50s/60s and she manages to look very modern and not constumey. I prefer the 40s and the mod styles from the 60s, and would just incorporate the ageless styles of that time into my wardrobe.

I love dusty and darker colors! My skin is light with yellowish, greenish undertones and my hair is a medium ash brown. I love how those colors make me look expensive!!! I learned it thanks to you Aly !!! 💕
