Keychron K8
Alphanums: Cherry "Ergo Clears" - Cherry MX Clear with Gateron Red springs. Stems and appropriate switch housing surfaces lubed with Krytox 205G2, springs bag lubed with PTFE oil. Deskeys switch films installed. The switches were broken in for about a year and a half and were harvested from a Varmilo VA87M.
Lubed, clipped, bandaid-modded stabilizers
Left side modifiers (tab, shift) and spacebar: Zilent V2 78g
Right side modifiers (backspace, enter, functions, etc): InputClub x NovelKeys Hako Royal Clear
One Holy Panda and one stock Cherry Clear installed for reference.
I thought I always preferred heavy switches as I'm a pretty heavy typist. After getting 45g Topre-S, stock Holy Pandas, then making these ergo clears, I think I'm starting to come around to lighter springs.
The tactile bump of the Clear stem is still present, but doesn't take as much force to activate, so the tactile event feels more rapid/sudden than with the stock spring. Additionally, the spring from the Gateron Red is linear-ish; the force required for a tactile event is similar to the force at the bottom of the stroke. This contrasts to the original MX Clear spring, where the force required after the tactile event increases drastically. In the stock switch, this results in a "cloud-like" feeling while typing, but can be fatiguing for typists who habitually bottom out on each keystroke (me!).
My hands aren't as tired after long typing or gaming sessions. After lubing and putting films on, I think these are a step louder than Zilents or Topre-S, but are quieter compared to stock (duh) and much quieter than Holy Pandas.
