In the previous years, Switzerland was anything but successful at the Eurovision Song Contest. DJ Bobo and Paolo Meneguzzi didn't even make it to the finals in 2007 and 2008, and things didn't go much better in the years before that. For Moscow the Swiss sent the Lovebugs, a band that had been successful in the Swiss charts for years, but still had the image of a non-conformist independent band. Was that perhaps the reason for their elimination in the first semi-final?

The Lovebugs had been around for 15 years in 2009, but of the founding members, only singer Adrian Sieber was still in the group. Over the years, drummer Simon Ramseier, guitarist Thomas Rechberger, bassist Florian Senn and keyboardist Stefan Wagner joined the band. The five Basel band members were an experienced live band and they are still active as a band today. Appearances as the opening act for Ash, Marc Owen and the Rolling Stones earned them the reputation of being the "best opening act in the world" - the legendary Britpop formation Ocean Colour Scene is said to have even rejected the Swiss as an opening act on the grounds because they were too good for an opening act.

Musically, the five Basel band members see themselves at the interface between pop, indie, disco and rock. Their eleventh album, "The Highest Heights", was released in January 2009. Their CD then also contained the song of the same name that the Lovebugs performed in Moscow. "The Highest Heights" cannot deny its Britpop gene: fast drum beats drive the catchy, melodic pop song forward.

The title is about the Lovebugs' existence as a band, explained frontman Sieber. "Hiding together to record songs, working on them 24 hours a day and releasing a CD after six months. Sometimes that feels like jumping from a high mountain. Giving the whole project away and hoping that people like it." However, they were unable to win enough fans in the semi-finals and so they only performed once in Moscow.

After a long hiatus, Adrian Sieber announced the return of the band with a new line-up and a new forthcoming album Heartbreak City in 2024.

LYRICS:

The highest heights
I climb a tree, so mighty high
I see the world from just beneath the sky
The dreams I dream, they take me high
Oh, it's always worth a try

The time is now, so stop the tease
And may I have your attention, please
The time has come, the curtains call

Will you catch me when I fall? Oh yeah
From the highest heights of all? Oh yeah

I climb this tree, the highest heights
From beneath the stars, I see little lights
The dreams I dream demand their rights
Oh

Will you catch me when I fall? Oh yeah
From the highest heights of all? Oh yeah

How will I ever know?
I've always gotta know
Will you catch me?

Will you catch me when I fall? Oh yeah
From the highest heights of all? Oh yeah
Will you catch me?

Ils ont le talent pour gagner n'importe quel concours de l'eurovision, je crois que c'est le jury qui n'est pas bon...
