Will COP27 address Africa's climate challenges? | The Stream

Although Africa has contributed the least to global carbon emissions, the continent remains the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and African needs for climate finance and adaptation are among the greatest.

There are high expectations that this year's UN climate conference, hosted in Sharm El-Sheikh, will focus on how to better meet the needs of those on the continent and other parts of the developing world.

In the Horn of Africa, millions of people are facing starvation from multiple droughts, while elsewhere in Africa communities are bearing the brunt of flooding and landslides. Annually, the continent loses between 5 to 15% of its GDP due to the climate crisis, according to the African Development Bank. The continent also has to deal with the disproportionate impact of the climate emergency while trying to boost its own economic development.

According to a recent UN report, most countries are failing to meet their commitments to cut carbon pollution even as global greenhouse gas emissions on track to rise 10.6% by 2030.

Will COP27 serve the interests of African nations? In this episode of The Stream, we'll look at Africa’s priorities for the upcoming UN climate conference.

One of the environmental Current Issues in Sierra Leone is
Deforestation,
the destruction of vast areas of forest (e.g., unsustainable forestry practices, agricultural and range land clearing, and the over exploitation of wood products for use as fuel) without planting new growth is affecting the livelihood of innocent citizens.
In August 14th 2017 Sierra Leone suffered the most destructive mudslide that claimed the lives of thousand Sierra Leoneans due to deforestation in Freetown.

I guess not enough has changed in our attitude towards our contribution to climate change since the 1st COP meeting that was held in Berlin, Germany in March, 1995. Will it take COP 52 before significant change happens?

Ask the multinationals to think at the poor people starving and save Africa instead of thinking at their own profit! The only thing the rich societies interest, " investing" Africa, is to increase and distroy a beautuful continent!

You all know the solutions, stop making guns and bombs, and start planting trees, make serious approach to issues, stop illegal fire arm sale to Africa, people should stop over harvesting trees in the Amazon, and Congo basin, like yesterday the invasion of Congo rebels African joined army is a threat to the forest and people of Congo which an impact in world climate.

The global south's increase in emissions over the next 30 years is forecasted to negate the reduction of emissions on the global north. This is just a transfer of money. Maybe Africa should think about committing to renewables if it wants to be taken serious.

Russian aggression has given the World climate goals another setback. For some Countries, it will be a choice between coal and power outages in the winter. In many Countries, they won't have the luxury of preferring natural gas when oil and coal are cheap short term fixes. These agreements always depended on something we presently don't have, stability...

It is so difficult to listen or watch Al Jazeera at times, because you're presenters tend to have a little arrogance that's very annoying especially while talking to African or black people it seems as if you BBC and CNN have this arrogant as if you are going to present the news as well as explain it.
