Converting Kilometers to Miles witout a calculator

EDIT: this is meant to be a close approximation to the real final value. A couple people that I really like have pointed out to me that that these numbers are not exact but they are certainly very close. My point was to get someone to have a close approximation without a calculator or pen and paper aka in your head. Please realize this is not exact for exact you really need an app or calculator.

1 km = roughly 6/10th (or 60%) of a mile (IRL is is 0.621371192237 of a mile but how can we do that in our heads? so I'm rounding off).... If we can calculate that in our heads it's best to calculate 10% and put that number aside....then calculate 50% and then add the 10% number and 50% number together and you will have your KM to Miles answers. so 100 KM....10% would be 10; 50% would be 50, add 50+10= 60 miles....so 100 KM is 60 miles. Let's walk through some examples together.

Long story short, I had to replace my speedometer in my old civic when I was growing up and I got one on ebay (the very early days of ebay) for like $20. I didn't realize it came from a Canadian civic. So the speedometer was in kilometers. All I did was just halve it and add 20 lol. Wasn't dead on accurate but it kept me from getting tickets.

That's cool! Thanks! Showing my kids. I suck at math and this is kind of how I find out how much something is on sale, in my head. So, if it's 35% off I multiply 10% of the price by 3 and add 5% of the price (or half the 10% amount), then subtract that amount from the price. I know it's kind of backwards, but it's what works for me.

I learned the basics of the metric system in school. A meter is 40 inches. A kilometer is 1, 000 meters which is .621 miles. Beyond that it is pencil and paper for me. Lol 😂

10km is about 6 miles. Five miles is about 8km. Given only America and a tiny other country is still not using Napoleon’s excellent metric system is it not time to convert to metric?

100km ~62miles ConveRsion has CR in it :) To go the other way for rest of us miles X 1.6 = Km

100km is 62 miles. 100 miles is 168km. Just go metric 👍🇨🇦
