Of the 1,434 Washington teachers who achieved 2017 National Board Certification, 51 are from Spokane Public Schools. Hear a few of them discuss why they decided to undertake the challenge of becoming a NBCT.

National Board Standards represent a consensus created by teachers to advance the quality, expertise and continuous learning of teachers nationwide. Many consider it to be the highest symbol of professional teaching excellence.

Washington state has the most new National Board for Professional Teaching Standards teachers of any state, increasing its total number of National Board teachers last year by more than 10 percent.

Because teachers in 2024 have so much extra time and resources to do this, when they're not working at their second job to pay rent and student loans, doing the job of 20 parents in the classroom, and the work of 3 teachers and 2 administrators at their understaffed schools.
