I believe an issue with hero movie sequels is that a significant element of what drove a character's popularity is their original villains. A hero concept with crappy villains never makes it off the ground, while new villains for long beloved heroes rarely stack up to pre-existing ones in the minds of most audience members.

"Shut up crime!" I love Super! It wasn't perfect but it was really fun to watch. It didn't hold back in depicting violence and the performances were great.

Well of course Dark Phoenix bombed hard, it become defunct the moment Disney bought Fox and it wasn't even released yet.

Dark Phoenix "failed" because Marvel Studios interfered

the original script for Dark Phoenix had Skrull as the villain, an explosive battle in space between Jean/Phoenix and the Skrull armada and another battle outside an US Government building

Marvel Studios decided to steal these plot points and use them for their Ms Marvel film, then demanding Fox to completely rewrite the film, thus making the general audience believe that Dark Phoenix is a "bad film"

all of this is true - there are set photos confirming this aswell as comments from producers and cast

The suicide squad (2021) deserves more love, it genuinely was a fun movie, better than its predecessor... the actors and actresses were incredible and spot on (John Cena, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie...), the comic timing and action were perfectly balanced, a true fun ride start to finish...
