We guess BMW hasn't learned anything from the backlash for last year's subscription shenanigans, because they're back at it again! They've revealed a suite of five products that can be activated with a subscription on certain newer models. Ray and Zach voice their disdain and displeasure with the expected zeal and moxie.

The hack will be to buy a baseline model then taking it to a shop to unlock all the features. There's going to be businesses that'll figure out a model around this to be successful.

Just add the options before negotiating the sale price. The dealer will know turning them on doesn’t cost anything

This is gonna be a nightmare when cars become all electric. They can shut off your car if you don't pay a monthly miles subscription.

BMW already has an on going revenue stream, it is the maintenance. I would know I have owned a few.

Generally hate the idea of subscriptions, but oh how I wish MB had made the ECO stop/start system on mine a subscription. Then again they'd probably have charged a yearly fee to turn the damn thing off.

Does this mean you can get a BMW that works with a physical key only to open doors and start the car, and not a remote start? Heck, i'll take the free manual option any day! I also wonder if I was to buy a BMW with a keyless remote system that was under subscription, would the monthly cost include any needed repairs to the remote system if it fails? If I was to buy a used BMW that was more than 3-yeas old, how would I get the subscription activated in my name and what would that cost?

That is just ridiculous ! The only thing that maybe, just maybe I could see ( I would not pay for ) a subscription for would be some full driving feature that might need lots of updates that need the car brought to the dealer for .

If these "options" are nothing more than a change in the computer programming in the vehicle that I own, then I've already paid for it so it best be turned on at no charge to me.

We knew this was coming, but I’m shocked they are making this RETROACTIVE to 2019 models! Does that mean for a 2019 with an already-active feature, that BMW somehow deactivates it (either through some OTA update, or when the vehicle is brought to the dealer for maintenance), then they put you over a barrel to pay a subscription fee - FOR A FEATURE YOU ALREADY PAID FOR!!!

It’s like Wyze cameras.

The only issue I have is if a subscription item is causing an issue with the car. Who is responsible for fixing? For example, the engine will not start. They trace the problem back to the "remote start", which the subscription is not activated, and the "remote start" has to be fix. Is the owner of the car responsible for fixing an item that provides no benefit or will BMW fix it for free. (of course, I'm talking after warranty has expired)

Similarly I am not fond of leasing battery on vinfast.

What's next? Windshield wiper subscription, . headlights subscription.

This is what results from "Thinking out of the Box"...More often, I believe, getting what is in the old box is sufficient.

Why do you say the cost is built into the car when sold. Their accountant would say the costs are deferred and offset by the revenue from subscriptions.

I rather have a old school key 🔑 start than something that ridiculous I am a old school guy. 🙂

Sort of like nitrogen in your tires 🙄 does it come with lifetime loss replacement

Toyota does this for remote start as well on the tundra. You have to pay to keep it when the warranty runs out. Doesn’t work from the key fob either once deactivated. A sad trend.

Curious. Is a dealer required to provide copy of a the PDI report to customer buying a ‘new’ car, and if not, is there any advantage to asking for it? If the dealer took any corrective steps to any defect they found with the new car before selling it, would that be on the PDI report or not? If not, any other type of paperwork to ask for?
