Best Salt Water Density Experiment Ever (Maybe)

preview_player
Показать описание
Add tons of salt to water and many nearly invisible layers of salt water of different densities form. But using food coloring and water balloons we can begin to visualize the layers that form. In this experiment we allow the salt water to concentrate and separate based on the density of the layers. Water Balloons filled with salt solution will sink to the level of the density of the solution they were taken from

This guy makes some great content, nice to see that we have YouTubers like him using their videos to educate!

This experiment is relevant for another reason. One thing that bothers me when it comes to Physics textbooks explanation of buoyancy is that, they just describe the phenomena ("light things float, heavy things sunk") without explaining the mechanism that leads to this.

The mechanism is simple: when 1 L of a 500g object is forced to sunk into 1L of water, 1000g of water are displaced upwards. This process consumes energy (thus it moves against the natural flow of things, entropy). However, when 1L of a 1500g objects naturally sinks into water, energy is given and that gives lift to the water which rises.

One thing that has been annoying me is to think about the ions in a salty solution and their relative weights. Phosphate (PO4, -3) and Nitrate (NO3, -1) are far heavier than Chloride (Cl-, -1), and this is coherent with an information I saw in another video (the sea water is richer in phosphorus and nitrogen below a hundred meters in water).

So, even gravity can affect chemical reactions when it comes to a planetary scale, and this bothers me because nobody talks about it.

Amazing insights thanks.. I wish you to TRY AN SIMILAR EXPERIMENT WITH AN OPEN WATER FLOW (instead of a closed water container like beaker).. lets say water at all 4 levels (densities) is continuously replenished.. thanks

If you’re gonna talk to people like they’re kids then how’s about making this a kids video on the kids part of YouTube 👍
