It's surprising that Guilliman hasn't tried diplomacy with these guys yet. Ultramar is really close to the Tau empire already.

The T'au were discovered in M35 and they were in their prehistoric times, then for 6000 years contact was lost until now, so this is not technically first contact in 40k

AKA two sides of the same coin in a lose-lose situation for the universe. The Tau sound more moral, but their goal is the exact same as the empire's, just branded under a different name. Either way, both sides are trying to force the universe into their ideologies by making them choose between uniting under a single banner or making a powerful enemy.

The adeptus mechanicus is probably the worst faction in the empire to make a deal with Tau, Salamanders and Tau would probably have a good alliance.

I get that people like the Tau but how GW has written them makes zero sense in the context of the 40k galaxy. If the Imperium ever got around to finishing the Damocles crusade the Tau empire wouldn't exist, hell the race would be extinct.

The Tau didn't "win" anything, they survive purely because the Imperium is too busy fighting genuine threats to the galaxy as a whole.

Tau is like a human who wants to make a universe like Startrek and human xenophobic

Calling what happened in the Damocles Gulf a crusade is an affort to real crusdes.

The imperium had 15 Guard regiments, alltogether 800 marines in the conflict, 1 titan maniple and a small Navy flottila. The ministratum makes bigger rounding erros than the forces the imperium dedicated to the eradication of the tau. And if not for the nids deus-exmachina the imperium would have succeded.

A more agitated sector govenor can muster more forces than the tau "empire".
